Would anyone know just what the Part No. for the front shock replacement cartridges are?

I've looked in the KYB, Monroe and Gabriel catalogues - THEN did a quick cross reference search - and lo-and-behold came up with the following list:

KYB - 365008 or 366002
Monroe - 73976 or 73304
Gabriel - G44902 or G44450

Also, since all these catalogues are overseas, they refer to 4000/5000 series cars. Are they part of the 100/200 series?

You would be probably much better off starting with the Audi part number - then crossing that over to the aftermarket manufaturers.

Email me your chassis number & engine number & I can give you the original number. There is also "sports", "rough road" equipment level that had different inserts. These are listed on your manufacturers plate as an option code.

Wish it was easier.....

Here are the part# for the front/rear shocks:

Monroe - S3806+/S2005+
Gabriel - G44450/no rear
KYB - 366002/no rear
Audi VAG# - 443 413 031D
Hope someone else will find this useful.

*knock, knock, knocking on... front suspension door*

OK, finally got around to installing the cartridges this weekend. Took the car for a nice long drive over different roads to see how the Monroes (part no. E3806+) would react.

The first thing I noticed was the distinct "knocking" sounds coming from the front suspension (which is what I replaced). Now note that there was an extra washer in the parts pack that accompanied my replacement cartidges, but the instructions DID NOT mention what to do with them and neither did my Haynes manual.

It would seem that the washer is some sort of shim to be used when installing the cartidges. I did actually compare the replacements to the originals for size etc. and noticed that the new ones were a little shorter. But since nothing was said about the shims I simply left them out.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? :beat:

Cheers!

MrAudi,

I've done a bit more research since posting this morning. Thanks for the support.

A Toyota MR2 owner called Dr.Hess noticed that the Monroe cartidges he installed required a 1-4mm shim to stop the tube from moving even after the strut (damper) cap nut was torqued all the way up to 130Nm.

A couple of Volvo owners have also noticed knocking noises coming from their front end after installing new cartidges.

I think that Monroe really should tell us what the bit in their "parts packs" are for!!!

Ok, update on the situation...

This weekend I pulled the struts apart again and put the "extra" washer in at the top of the insert. Bolted the whole lot back together and TADA! 100kms of silent running since.

Better note this down somewhere.
