View Full Version : Buying an A3, what to look out for?

May 21st, 2004, 02:42 PM

as you can see, this is my first post here and im new to this site...

i was hoping some of you can help me as im planning on buying an A3 turbo. I currently own a honda which im selling.

First of all, how reliable are these for everyday driving? can these engines handle mods and still be used daily? (chip, exhuast, filter)..

also, when inspecting one, what should i look out for? do they all come equiped with the same features? do they all come in leather? (what colours are available? whats the most common?).

what year model comes with DBW?

i know they do 0-100 km/h in about 8.2, anyone know how quick it is down the 1/4 mile?

any additional info/tips would be greatly appreciated!

thanks in advance.. :)

Welcome aboard.... I wrote something similar to this recently.... will fish it out and post again.

Re your specific queries

* mods - the other lads here will be able to answer this one... I'm still running stock (except the stubby, of course!)
* spec - nope, there is a base spec (climate control, cruise, sports seats, sports suspension) and a number of options, specifically leather, sunroof, armrest, PDC (mostly dealer fitted I think), BOSE audio upgrade, ABS, 4*airbags, ASC / TCS
* DBW - fitted to MY01 onwards (some like mine are 00 build but 01 spec - see thread below for differentiating details)

A3 model year differences (http://www.ozaudi.com/nuke/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=9129&highlight=#9129)

Assume you're looking to buy second hand? What's your criteria?

Colours are mainly dark.... without referring back to the brochures (and not differentiating by model year), there are:
Ming Blue (metallic)
Brilliant Black (solid)
Ebony Black (metallic) {taa Chux}
White (solid)
Silver (metallic)
Red (solid)
Silvery Blue (metallic)

There are also a few.... ummm... rarer and distinctive colours out there including:
Merlin Purple http://members.iinet.net.au/~blahboy/spotted/tt.jpg
Brilliant Yellow http://private.carsales.com.au/photos/255567.jpg
Java Green http://private.carsales.com.au/photos/149379.jpg
Merlot Red (aka burgundy) http://private.carsales.com.au/photos/180460.jpg
Vittoria Gold http://private.carsales.com.au/photos/101097.jpg

Thanks for the replies...

whats the difference between Brilliant Black (solid) and Ebony Black (metallic)??

The yellow looks pretty nice on it...

Ok, im after a 3 door turbo, low $20ks, under 100,000 kms, leather, preferably black or silver, in good condition inside out....

By the way im from sydney..

ps whats PDC?

pss how low can you lower an a3 on stock shocks and 18 inch rims? is there much room under the rear guards?

whats the difference between Brilliant Black (solid) and Ebony Black (metallic)??

Brilliant Black is plain old "jet black" whereas Ebony Black is like a very dark grey metallic... it has the normal metallic speckles which means it hides little swirls and scratches better.

ps whats PDC?

Park Distance Control.... ie. reversing / parking beepers.

There's plenty of enthusiastic A3 lads in Sydney.... Costa (XXX-18T) is running 18s Breytons with coilovers, Daniel (Chux) has just added RS4 rims in 18s also with coilovers.... I'm Sydney based also... methinks A3s are heading for world domination.... hah hah hah hah (Dr Evil impersonation)!!!! :D
