I was looking at trading the Astra (gettin too many k's now - 35k!!!) and getting a TDi Golf.
I was just wondering if anyone has one or knows anyone with one and what they think after driving it for a few days weeks etc.
I took one for a test drive and it blew me away... they are really comfy, nice to drive, everything is in the right spot, and FAST! I was surprised at how fast the lil thing went... I wasn't expecting it at all...
Any input would be good...
Have fun,
Simon

General concensus (sp?) on vwvortex is that they are absolute rippers.

I've driven that black one in the APR video and it goes.
I was giving it a little bit of a hard time and was still returning 7L/100km! 8)

Thanks for your input!!!!
I just have to wait till my car comes back... 2 weeks and still not fixed!!!

We have a Mk3 TDi Golf which has just arrived with us from NZ.
A jap import, we had it for 2 years. Pretty quick of the mark and gets almost 900km to a tank of diesel. I would imagine the Mark 5 is even better. The only unfortunate part here in Oz is the price of diesel. In NZ even now its around 40c / litre cheaper than petrol.

I dont know why diesel is so expensive here... its a bi-product!!!!
The mk5 is supposed to get around 1000 - 1100k's from a tank!
Thats about a fortnights worth of driving for me! saves me quite a bit on fuel - even if its more expensive!
Have fun,
Simon

we have just purchased the 2 litre tdi golf with 6 speed auto.
have not really tried it out yet, but feels really fast when pushed.
the auto tranny is fantastic, the engine obviously does not rev out very much, but with 320 nm of torque from 1,700 rpm it really picks up its skirts and flies.
will be driving it melb/parramatta and return in a couple of weeks.
cruising expect about 5.5 l/100 km, aboiut 6,5 to 7 around town, driven gently.
really a bit too early to be exact as i expect the engint to keep freeing up for a couple of thousand ks or more (we have not reached 1,000 km yet).
hope this helps: i thing it is a fantastic piece of motoring.

Actually diesel is not a "bi-product" here, I work for an Oil Refinery and we currently set our refining conditions to make diesel. I think you will find that the demand for diesel is high (mainly due to the road transport industry), consequently that is one reason the price is high.
Also the cost of refining diesel is more expensive, new fuel regulations (Euro 4 spec) require the amount of sulphur in diesel to be reduced from 500ppm to below 50ppm as of 2006 (we have been producing this since 2003). This required the building of a new Hydrodesulphuriser Plant costing $45 million. As of 2007 the sulphur content of diesel will be below 10ppm.
Remember that for every litre of fuel, you are paying 38cents in Excise Tax to the Government http://www.ato.gov.au/businesses/content.asp?doc=/content/4085.htm&page=8&H8
Hope this information helps.

Funny, but excluding the current madness in fuel prices, diesel in NZ was roughly half that for unleaded. There is an additional road user cost applied for diesel users of around $NZ120 for 5000km - which had to be paid for in advance with a label showing Km at purchase and expiry km that is displayed on windscreen. Still cheaper to run than petrol though.

I just drove a 2.0TDI with the DSG for 2 days while my R32 was being serviced..........great car, wouldnt know its a diesel unless you are driving slowly with the windows down.
If I was in the market for a new car I would definately look at this car.
Cheers
Dave.

we drove our 2.0 tdi auto to sydney from melb several weeks ago; sat on the hume at the legal limit with cruise control, arrived in parramatta with 905 km on the trip meter and needed 45 litres of diesel to fill the tank.
my wife averages 6.5 l/100 km around town.

38c excise still leaves $1 going to the oil companies.
True, diesel is no longer the cheap fuel it used to be, but most industry commentators and motoring groups agree that the current price of diesel is unjustified purely price-gouging by oil companies. I think we're the only country in the OECD where diesel is more expensive than petrol (both in pre-tax and taxed terms).
Of note, diesel seems to sell at a lower retail margin than petrol - typically 6-7cpl vs up to 5-12cpl for petrol.

Diesel is made from the same extraction as heating oil, which is used extensively in the US. That's why every year during our summer (their winter), the price of diesel goes up.
Supply and demand.

Hey all,
New to the group, but I've had my Mk V 2.0TDi DSG for around 7 weeks now and what can I say, still love the car. Averaging around 6.5l/100kms without sparing the right pedal. Also recently installed an AMD Technik ECU remap, and from my "seat of the pants" meter, it's about as fast as a standard Mk V GTi. Waiting to get it dyno'd at the moment. Comfortable ride, rolls a bit in corners - but, hey, it is the Comfortline spec and not really tuned for hard driving. Apart from that - VW aftersales service is excellent, no probs to report so far and I'm still looking for any excuse to take the car out for a spin.

:( In most European countries diesel is cheaper as it's taxed less, most vehicles on diesel produces less greenhouse gas (CO2), it's a way to promote on saving the environment, and also I think part of that Kyoto Agreement thingy. But Australia and the US hasn't signed the agreeement so the government doesn't promote the use of diesel. Diesel around my area is already the same price as 98Octane Petrol.... and I don't think they'll ever reduce the tax on diesel to promote it, what they'll do is simply increase the tax on petrol knowing the goverment!!

I had a Mk5 1.6 Golf as a loan car - very underwhelming (and not just the engine). Gutless but also thirsty. Even when driven gently, I was getting worse fuel economy than my 1.8T A4.

Hi,
we have had our 2.0 tdi with dsg auto for six months.
Trip in early Jan from Melbourne to Kiama (NSW) and return on the Hume with cruise control at 110 kph saw 5.1 l/100 km, plus an additional 0.1 when the air con was on.
One problem I find is that depending on the pump, it is sometimes very slow to get the last 5 litres of diesel in.
