Hello

Does anybody have any experience of welding an exhaust manifold from a 200 turbo or UR-quattro?

The UK quattro Network website mentions a welding process called nickel powder welding which has been successful in welding cracks in exhaust manifolds on quattros. Does anyone know if this process is available in Australia?

Thanks

Darren

:D Hi,
My UR quattro has a welded manifold,it was repaired by a previous owner with contacts in the aircraft industry.
That's the best chance as far as I know.
They usually break because the engine mounts fail and the engine then sits on the subframe.I check the quattro with a piece of cardboard every service,6 months. The engine sits very close to the subframe on the drivers side.

I'm not sure but the process you may be looking for is CADWELD. Its used for attaching electrical studs to rails and is an exothermic process.
There is a powder charge that contains the weld material which is ignited and melts the material into the mould. (Bronze/Cadmium alloy or something) How you would use it on a manifold is another matter. Maybe just pouring on the powder and igniting might fill the crack, worth experimenting.

We used to source it from Erico, who used to be based up the central coast. Sorry I dont have any more info.

If the manifold from the 200 5T is the same as that which featured on the 3B/ABY (S2) engines, I have one you can make me an offer on

Thanks for the offer. However I think the 3B/ABY manifold is a two part unit from the 20V. I'm after a one piece manifold from a 1982 model Audi turbo engine which was used on 200 5T (KJ series engine) and the WR, WX, MB and GV engines from the UR-Quattros.

If this is not the case then I may make you an offer.

Ah I think you might be right - it may not fit.

The 3B/ABY manifold is one piece, but I am not sure whether it will easily fit a 10V head. Maybe different stud patterns? If you find out if it fits, let me know

Hi Darren,
I think what you are looking is in the link below.
These people have been refered to me by an aircraft mechanic I know.

If it is still not fixed try Dialynx I have used their aftermarket manifolds and they are better than orig however make sure you are sitting down when he gives you the price. Welding them is a bit hit and miss I have only seen bad jobs in this area and they don't seem to last long.
