Hi Guys,
Ive been doing a little research as i am interested in getting a sat nav system for my car. I want to get an original Audi one (one that has sat nav, TV, DVD, and mp3, or do they all have this as standard?). I understand that i need to get a RNS-E system (is that correct), however im confused as to which one exactly i need for my year and model vehicle. Can anyone give some guidance?
I have a single din original Audi concert deck in the car, so will any modifications be required? (i would rather not, and keep my original climate control unit, ive heard that that might have to be changed), are there plug and play kits available?
Thanks
Regards
Joe

Joe you're in for some hard work.
I recently did this conversion in my B6 A4 (don't have experience with the B5s though) and it was a big job..
Have a look here for my write-up/pics/comments: http://www.ozaudi.com/nuke/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=7318
For the B5 you apparently need an A6 RNS-E. The best source of information on retrofits is the NavPlus site http://www.navplus.us.
The TV tuner is an optional add on, the RNS-E will not play DVDs in its standard form (the drive is a DVD drive, but it doesn't play DVD movies) but you can get a Dietz add on that will allow this with a separate DVD player.
The good news is that the RNS-E does play MP3s (either on CD or SD card) and obviously does the Nav part..
Good luck!

Thanks Alister, it looks like tere is a bit of work!
With the Dietz add in do i still need another DVD player, or will it allow me to play DVDs from the DVD drive in RNS-E unit?

The Dietz module just allows you to plug in other devices such as DVD players, PS2/XBOX etc.
You would still require an additional external DVD player however. I believe Blaupunkt have one that is similar size to the glove box mounted CD changer in the B6/B7.

Quattro_joe,
The DVD player built into the Nav unit ONLY plays the Navigation software on DVD and audio/MP3 CD's.
As Alister said the Dietz unit allows you to connect an external video source to your unit. Can be a tuner for TV, a DVD for movies an all in one unit etc...

Alister,
Would you be able to tell me where you sourced your NAV unit from, and roughly how much im up for? Ive been doing some research on the internet (enay and others), and am not sure if the EU or US version is suitable for our Australian model Audi cars.
Thanks
Joe

I sourced my Nav unit from eBay Germany (www.ebay.de) - I'm not sure exactly what they're going for at the moment but budget around the $2k mark.
You are after a European A6 unit (part number 4B0 035 192 P) and not the US unit for your B5 A4. The US units run a slightly different software standard and are not as easily adapted to work in Australia - they are also typically more expensive than the EU units as there is more demand for them.
Definitely have a look at http://www.navplus.us/ - there is a wealth of information there including info on retrofitting in B5s.
Good luck!
