Default i think a coil pack just died! (b5s4)

2001 B5 S4, drove to work fine, not happy on way home, whole car osscilates at idle subtly, but apply a gentle foot and the car sounds awful, judders wont pull, sounds like misfire. My guess is coil pack, I dont have any diagnostic stuff, week before xmas, all looking bad.... rang audi brisbane, $180 each and ex sydney. so....
obv cheaper ex overseas but is this the going price in australia?! is there an after market part? i am guessing its not a plug/lead, wouldnt expect such a sudden failure.
    any help/suggestions finely appreciated!
    thanks

I went through the same thing and only just fixed it today at home. Fault finding to the max and swapped around coil packs when I thought I found a dead one. The dead one remained dead on all cyclinders. Bought 4 new coil packs and back running smooth again. The car was reacting like a cylinder had dropped, exhaust sucking, fluttering under acceleration etc.

My recent issue turned out to be a faulty ICM. Ask the dealer for a price on one of the two ICM's we have in the car, I was quoted $575 each.

Could be any number of things. Here is a short list:
    - icm or wiring
    - coil packs or wiring
    - spark plug
    - boost leak
    - cam shaft lobe wear (unlikely but possible)

VCDS scan is a good starting point.

Given the age of these things, refreshing the ignition components is a good idea.

just replaced all coil packs, both ICMs in the s4 (plus plugs). considered various options incl the integrated kits available. However, i went cheap!

got this tune up kit, landed within a week from USA off ebay, all after market bits, all fit perfectly, car runs as it should. I dont know what teh quality difference is between the expensive and cheap options but time will tell! If it all starts to fail I will have to go down the double or more price root. total cost $269AU.
Now i have to return my loan parts to their owner (thanks again!)
