Default PROJECT: (R)S2 = More Power

    hi guys,

first post in this arena, so be gentle...

As you may very well be aware i am the successive owner to Karls Blue S2 - RS2 enhanced little beast.
While i have been enjoying the car as is, it is a great handling and revving little package, it needs a little more power to be of the standard i was used to with my Stage 3 S4.

My next move is the most logical, as i think from standard the car should of had a short intake tract to better the throttle response and keep IATs low.
So i am going to a reverse intake manifold setup and doing away with the RS2 setup. Along with this will be a slightly larger intercooler

so the intake and intercooler setup im going with is the Wagner tuning as i feel it is the most tried and tested again and again over custom fabbed intakes. Bolt on and away we go.

On to the turbo.... the hybrid RS2 turbo isnt too bad, but with the KKK old technology it is slow to spool...
Karl also supplied a GT3071r turbo which he had intended to use but never got around to it.

Doing a bit of research on this turbo i think it is a good compromise on power vs torque on a stock I5 motor (as i have no intention of touching the internals) So Karl has done well with his intended choice. And i will see to it that his choice is the right one .
i actually think that this turbo will spool earlier with the 0.62 a/r or at least the same as the rs2 even though it is larger which will be great for intake temps
Coupled with this i will be looking at an increased flowing exhaust manifold from wagner as well.

my only concern is boost spiking on this style of turbo /setup (most other peoples experience), which means i may have to do away with the smaller factory external waste gate and go something larger (possible Tial 44mm) to try and control this as i am not going standalone and using the factory ecu with a plug in chip tune firstly. But i will stay with the stock wastegate for now to maintain factory type look under the bonnet and monitor the outcome

Now i seriously considered sticking with the factory intake setup and installing water/meth to control temps as i had great success with injection on the S4, but ive since changed my mind as water/meth wont fix the throttle response of the longer intake tract. But (and its a big BUT) im not ruling out water/meth down the track (summer is coming afterall)

My goal is to at least match or exceed my old S4 in power with this setup - circa 250kw atw - but in a slightly lighter car

I will post before and after dyno plots to track the progress.
    Wish me luck

*Horsepower is how fast you hit the wall and torque is how far you take the wall with you.

Good stuff momento, glad you enjoy your I5, as you can see i got one too
There's an S2 which participated in targa tasmania, i know the car well, never been in it though and an urs4 that both have the same gt30 turbo and they go pretty hard.
I wish you all the best.

    Thanks Rosso.

The sound of the I5 in full song is something to be marvelled doesnt it...

What tops off the S2 is the note when the wastegate opens.. im considering running a dump pipe for the wastegate to enhance that sound or possibly even an electronic valve to open and shut it depending on my mood..... hmmmm im wondering if it may cheapen up the whole image of the S2 though.....

They say stock wastegate is good for 450hp.

    No need to touch it.

PRJ recommends using only .8X as the smallest housing, otherwise its surge city.

The limit for stock rods is about 100NM per rod (give or take).

034 chips are puss, look into a custom map by PRJ if you want to have a good tune. Marc Swanson should also be able to do something for you.

    thanks jchen

the housing i have is the 0.63 so it is smaller than the 0.82... im mindful of surge but need to monitor it of course

ive been in touch with PRJ but its a little harder as i would need to send logs back and forth constantly in order to fine tune. He was a little hesitant but he did say it was doable with a lot of hours back and forth. Obviously not ideal for me being on the other side of the world. Ive also been chatting to him about rewiring a more reliable and larger RS4 maf but again he would need to log and tune from overseas which isnt ideal.

Im happy to try the 034 plug in chips for now, even if it is a very conservative/safe tune, as it will still be a significant power hike from the RS2 level and then later im happy to look into custom mapping or standalone if i want to go all out.
But i dont want to go crazy on the S2 as afterall it is still a desirable car to own and drive...

I can link you to all the gear that you need to burn your own chips.

Its really not that big of a deal and your tune will be 100x better

I agree on keeping it simple.

Another person to talk to in Sydney for tunes is parso-rex his on vwgolf but he specialises in dyno tunes for vag cars. I know he can do most of the older cars and having a local is always a benefit
