Default Time for a new turbo......? 1.8T Quattro B5@170k AEB w/EBC in NSW

Decided to do service on Xmas, second time I have serviced my beloved bottle (named because of the colour) but after this service the turbo was never to be the same. My car has a stock turbo with an EBC running at 15psi and I am sure it has been remapped but can't be 100% certain as the previous owner wasn't the one who had done the upgrades.

Returning from Wollongong I noticed that the turbo was spooling but with a large hiss. At around 3psi all pressure is blown somewhere into the system and the car looses power as if it is being run too rich and choking - I remember the same in my 2.6 80 which had a leaky vacuum - coming off and back onto the peddle trying to go back on the turbo just makes the car judder violently, the turbo just won't go past 3psi without crapping out.

My initial thought was that the wastegate (which has been audibly rattling under deceleration) has failed open but the more I think about it I am pretty sure the turbo has just crapped out. Given that it is stock running at 15psi on 170k I am prepared to sidestep home DIY diagnosing and repair this time and take advantage of the predicament and give bottle some more boost.

I have found Ed @ Quattro Motorsport in Hornsby and wanted to hear from anyone who has dealt with/or would recommend him. The info on his website looks like my Audi couldn't be in any better hands but wanted to hear from others here if possible.

    Thanks

    hey mate,

I've personally dealt with Ed for about 2-3 years. He's done custom tunes for both my current 1.8T a4 and previous. (see my build threads if interested)
He has created custom Stage 1 files for my k03s turbo, and custom 98 and e85 tune for my current GT2871r setup with two injector variations.
From my experience I can highly recommend Ed, he really knows these car's inside and out and is very helpful in getting your car diagnosed and running 100%.

before jumping in on a stage 1 or above tune, I cannot stress enough to iron out any little issues you have with your car. Trust me, it is much easier to diagnose when stock then 90% through your build when most things are custom.

just from what you wrote, it seems like you have a severe boost leak, when turbos go they usually have a dentist drill whine. Definitely worth scanning the car, if you dont have the VCDS tool I highly recommend buying one if you plan on keeping the car

You'll be in good hands with ed. He knows the b5 platform well.

I'm running a stage 1 from him at the moment and I'm in the middle of going BT which he will custom tune.

    Definitely look up Ed.

Check the outlet hose from the turbocharger to the intercooler(pipe). Being rubber and it moves a lot, it can split at the part where the diverter valve sits and where it joins the pipe.

Any excuses to get a bigger turbo :).

Ed is good but at the end of the day, best if you speak to a few Audi tuner/specialist to get exactly what you want.

Thank you for the replies, I am following jimmyjumbo's advice and diagnosing first before taking my car to Ed.

Had a nightmare today trying to get a WiFi OBD adapter which was faulty and any hopes at getting a decent ELM 327 from an online retailer before going back to work on the 6th are slim.

On the back of the code read I will do a boost leak test when I next go to Wollongong, if a leak is the cause although I can't help being tempted by revhead's valid turbo outlet hose suggestion - although I will need to be in Wollongong anyway for tools to complete the job.

No serious garage space in Wolli Creek unfortunately.

Are you having trouble connecting the elm327 to your phone? iirc I thought mine was faulty but it was actually the ip settings. I left mine at work but I'll give out an IP address/DNS settings tomorrow to test.

Apart from that hose I mentioned, have a look around under the intake manifold for cracked hoses too. Remember the hoses on our car's are like 14-16 years old lol

Thanks Danny - the adapter connects to my phone but the software doesn't read it, it cycle through the protocols and then the connection fails. I contacted OBD fusion who said that because of the age, the car isn't OBD2 compliant and won't work so now I'm back onto legacy VAG-COM s/w. I do not have a cable so I am trying to setup the wireless adapter as a virtual cable to save myself T+$

I would be grateful if anyone knew of an app that would work but I am doubtful there will be any other than Ross-Tech VCDS but I am not shelling out for a HEX-NET adapter to make it work.

I know what you mean about the cracked hoses, I replaced the intake manifold one and I am sure when I dig around there will be a lot more. This is my fifth Audi (80 + 3 x TT's) and the condition of hoses on the A4 is the worst but suits the mileage.

It works on my 99 AJL even with a non Australian ECU(long story lol). I use dash command. I could get live info on intake temps, rev, timing etc.

Friend of mine is using those eBay vcds cable. They're limited but still allow you to read codes, could be wrong..view measuring blocks.
