Have you enquired with GIO what "choice of repairer" actually means?

does it really matter? ours cars are a glorified vw jetta, i can't see the big deal as long as it doesn't look grey when it's meant to be white for example.

    No, I haven't

However the documentation was clear on this, with no limitations other than they having to authorise the repairs beforehand for non pre-approved repairers. This is similar to what Allianz does, and I thought it was reasonable.

That's right,.."they have to authorize repairs".....but what if they won't, for the price "your repairer" requires?
I think they are part of the AAI/Suncorp Group,...which also owns AAMI?
    Pickles.

‘Choice of repairer’ to me doesn’t mean much - most in my past have all been pretty . It’s a car, drive it , don’t drive like an idiot or park in dodgy places will minimise risk. Can’t stop everything. I went with cheaper guys and with $ saved got a BlackVue 2ch dashcam to help with the security. Next years $ saved, might be due for new tyres, so can go for the best ones.
