Airbag Recalls

Had my A6 4F done on 24/12 by Audi Parramatta. Passenger airbag only. Took couple of hours, but they washed my car as well. I don't take my car there so that was nice of them.

UPDATE - Just picked up my B7, process only took about a hour. Ecu tune is unaffected. The whole service lot was a B7 day :))
Also had a complimentary Q5 loan car, make sure you request this when booking or you won't be provided with transport on the day.

Can you confirm that it was just the front passenger airbag that they replace ?

I was recently reading the service schedule and discovered "the airbag system must be renewed by your Audi Dealer or other Service Centre no later than 14 years after the date of manufacture".

Well, that's my 2005 B7... Sounds like a really expensive exercise... was wondering if anyone actually does this ??

Just the passenger front airbag, removal of glove box was all they needed to perform the recall.

I would think the mentioning of that type of service is usually just the routine checks during normal services, to ensure that the airbag is responsive to diagnostics so that in the case it were to be deployed it would receive communication from the vehicle; including checking the wiring and fault codes. As the vehicle wiring and sensors age they tend to become loose & brittle, especially the under seat sensor which can trigger an airbag light.
Too true, air bags are very expensive to replace, especially if it were all of them.

I sold my old B5 to my nephew.
I found out vehicles form 97 to 01 could be affected by an airbag recall.
Here is the kicker:
Audi can't replace the airbag because of the tooling.
So Audi is buying your old car back if the airbag is affected.
What I have been told by my nephews father, when he made the inquiry at Audi
If your airbag is affected, you won't get your car back, it will be sent off to Pickles Auction and they will determine the value of the car.
Is this fair, of course depending what have you put in the car money wise and what you get back for it, but.......is this even legal??
Any thoughts?

No, it'd be theft IF you didn't sign something with fine print when it was taken in for Audi to check. Even if your location would cancel the rego, you're still allowed to own it. I'd be cautious about what you hear and vigilant about what you agree to in writing.

Here in Canberra if your airbag isn't one of the Alpha airbags then your car can still be registered. Audi are of course extremely concerned about what happens if an driver of an effected car is injured. No doubt they'll put the screws on to dispose of the car or take it off the road.

I wouldn't take my car in, I removed the airbag, photographed it and sent in the photo. You could even take the airbag itself in if you are "qualified" to remove it. I should disclose that I had a raft of issues in getting my car identified so it was much broader.

Just wondering if anyone got a decent offer for their car, or am I dreaming thinking this would be the case? I know the value is supposed to be based on its age, condition, remaining rego and any extras.

in my case I had about $600 rego remaining and had recently just fitted a $800 towbar. So I was surprised when I was initially offered the princely sum of $1,200 for my ‘99 1.8TQ GP. When I queried they did move but only after a very very long conversation lasting a number of days with both Audi Aus, the dealership and pickles all pointing at the other parties as being responsible for the valuation and having no control of what the outcome was. In the end we settled at a stupid value that was still nowhere near what the car was worth.

Audi owners included in the Audi 69AE voluntary Recall announced by ACCC on 16 December 2020 have had successful outcomes by fitting unaffected Airbags and Wheels before they've taken their affected cars to Audi Dealerships for inspection.

Poor Buyback Outcome
There are very many stories about the low initial valuations and the subsequent delays in reviewing the initial buyback prices offered. Reports of a "blame game" between Audi and Pickles is ludicrous in the extreme. Who knows better than the actual owners what their car would have been worth just prior to the announcement.

Alternate Airbags & Steering Wheels:-
In response to the risk of losing their affected Audis to the Buyback, well maintained and preserved vehicles represent a significant financial loss.
Some owners have found compatible Airbags from later models that fit their cars and are actively assisting each other with expert technically qualified advice.

A marked increase in membership.
There are numerous non-public Facebook Pages were the discussion is very actively pursued. You can join whichever group suits you & there are many helpful members and admins.

Audi Dealer Airbag Inspections
After determining that unaffected Airbags were fitted, documents were provided to owners and the cleared VIN numbers were reported to regulatory authorities.

Greater numbers of owners have recently had their vehicles fitted with later compatible airbags sourced from other Audi Models. TRW Brand, rather than Takata, is the preferred option.

Above all, stay safe and understand the risks when handling these products.
If untrained, don't mess with it.
