Thread: Huge Bill RS4 B7

    Default Huge Bill RS4 B7

Ok so took my RS4 B7 into Audi today as I keep getting EPC & Traction control lights on the dash.

Audi came back to me and said that they have checked the ECU which appears to be fine however there is a dodgy earth wire in the wiring harness.

    My options are:

    • Spend another two hours stripping the harness as far as possible to look for a faulty connection/ground (labour cost)
    • Replace harness ($4100) which requires removal of engine and could total $10,000

Obviously if it isn't found in the harness that is accessible what the hell do I do?

Interesting, if they think there is an bad joint they should just be able to run a temporary earth wire to the point they believe is not grounded correctly. Just need to apply some basic electrical fault finding methodology.

I'd be very surprised if there is bad joint, all in loom joints tend to be soldered and major bonding points are all lugged to a threaded stud. A bad plug connection I can understand.

Sure you don't have a dud or faulty wheel sensor. A scan with the VCDs will soon tell you something.

I would get a 2nd opinion. Sorry I'm not much help.

I had a 91 Fairlane with intermittent crazy electrical issues (yeah I know....) Anyway, auto electrician just kept running piggyback earth wires to battery from various modules until it never resurfaced.
Black terminal on battery had half a dozen terminations on it but we just backed away slowly and all good.

I am confident in their diagnosis I have a mate who used to work for that particularly branch in the servicing team who recommended the head technician to me. I asked Audi that this person do all work on my car as he is considered an electrical guru.

Following on from my original post I have since spoken with Audi and my mate.

The guy at Audi is confident the problem is in the part of the harness between the throttle body and the ECU which he has access to.

I have gone ahead with the extra couple of hours of labour so hopefully it can be spotted and fixed., speaking with my ex Audi mate he said it will not come to removing the engine as he said he will find out exactly where the issue is and make me a harness that bypasses the damaged part and we can sort it outside of the dealership. He will find out tonight from the head Audi tech as he lives opposite him and let me know tomorrow.

LOL, I had EPC and TC lights come on last week also. I hope it turns out to be any easy fix for you.

I find it hard to reconcile 'Audi tech' and 'guru' but I am sure there are exceptions.

If you get no luck with the dealer, before ripping out a major harness at huge cost I'd find a reputable auto elec to look for the fault. Many of the good independent shops who specialise in these cars will know someone they use regularly.

I doubt it will be the harness unless it is pinched all of a sudden for some reason.

Have you googled? Other people have had the same issue and it has pointed to the throttle body.
