    Hi,

    Just bought a used Audi S3 2016 model about 3 weeks ago, so first time poster. Loving every minute of it.

    I've been looking in to tuning it, and have been reading about different stock tunes like ABT, APR and REVO.

    Was talking to the dealer I bought the car off today, and he recommended getting a custom tune done, rather than the stock tunes. So that it's specific for the car.

    My question is, has anybody had theirs custom tuned, and can anybody recommend a good tuning mechanic in Melbourne?

    I'd rather an off the shelf tune that's had 100's of hours of testing rather than a custom tune that looks good on a dyno

    Depends on your needs. The factory tune is effectively an off the shelf tune with safety and reliability parameters built in and 1.000's of hours of testing, rather than 100's. The Revo type tune has whittled down the safeguards (from a factory perspective) but the effectiveness of the tune does depend on the perspective of the code writer. The differences between the various off shelf tunes reflect the priorities of the tuner. Other than power / torque outcomes, improvements such as fuel consumption can occur but you should always question whether that is a good thing across the board. It indicates that the car is more efficient in certain conditions but will it have a safety margin in every condition?

    The custom tune again reflects the tuner and their beliefs. The custom tune is closer to the bone, extracting the most from the specific configuration. Questions that do rise are what happens as components age? Ultimate tunes that extract every available kw are tailored to very specific configurations. You really need a new car or all new components to get the best from one. If you're into time measured events then there is no better solution but the average joe may not even notice the difference on the street other than as a talking point / bragging right.

    what @sk67 said. Go to Underground Performance. They're very knowledgable and will definitely look after you.

    Had my S3 tuned couple of weeks ago and loving it!

    Thanks all for your input and advice. I've been looking at getting a Unitronic tune. But might have to check out underground performance first.

    Unitronic's great, you can upload the tune yourself or have a dealer do it for you. If you do it yourself you can roll it back to stock, to stage 1 or stage 1+ anytime. If you have a manual transmission they have a specific tune, but you will need to replace your stock clutch soon after, which will set you back around $2800 installed. Is your 2016 still under warranty, if so then hold off till it expires as Audi will void your warranty when its tuned.

    No my audi isn't under warranty anymore, so that is not an issue.

    I've been trying to find out whether the unitronic tune is possible on a mac, but haven't found any information as yet.

    How did you know your clutch needed upgrading after the unitronic tune?

    Will need to enquire with unitronic about the specific manual tune also.

    But yeah looks like I'm looking at going unitronic.

    As for. Other mods I'd look at doing, was thinking intercooler and carbon fibre intake.

    Not sure the software will run on Mac?
    Clutch will slip, put it into 2nd or 3rd, floor it, if the RPM increases and the speedo stays the same, or lags behind then your clutch is slipping. Or get on the highway, put it in 5th gear at 80kph and floor it, it'll give you more time to check it. My clutch started slipping as it couldn't hold the increased power/torque, RPM increased but speed stayed the same, oh and I could smell the clutch burning.
    Unitronic will ask you if you have the auto or the manual transmission when you contact them. In the manual tune torque builds consistently to its peak of 480nm for the stage 1+ tune, for the s-tronic it just comes on more abruptly.
