Finally. Arrived in the dark last night. Must say the driver was a real champ, everything the company should be. Unable to meaningfully inspect so heart in mouth until I got home. Nothing seen so far albeit it needs a wash as enclosed transport did not mean clean. Apparently the train is where the dirt happens, as I'm told.

So, the allroad has had to be banished to outside after the last 5 years in the garage.

A browse has so far not found any issues from the transport, fingers crossed. There are a few things to do and a few things noted. Someone in the past has spent a pile on this car with the Wagners and exhaust plus some alloy DV's that stood out today. Have to say that everywhere is amazingly clean. The engine bay is like new in all the out of the way places, no bugs in the radiator etc. The engine bay is a lot more open than the RS4, with vents straight into the bay from the wheel wells. You'd thing that that would throw in a pile of water, mud and "stuff" from the roads, but not.

The journey begins. Just need to find out where it starts.

Sunny data here in Sydney, hopefully for you too so you can get it out and inspect it in decent light.

Intermittently cloudy and sunny but blowing a gale. Enough for the bins up the street to get blown over. It should ease later today.

The grass is always greener........... a pair of near on 20 year old cars that have more parts nla by the day, the 6 is economical in the inverse sense at a time when fuel is heading up. Absolutely fun to own but never forget that guy who spent $64,000 on his. It'll never be me but always smart to remember that speed cost money, how fast do YOU want to go?

I reckon 500chp is where the line is. That's circa 4 sec 0 to 100 plenty fast for street cruising and SMT's. Beyond that it appears to be a love hate relationship between time on / off road and what's that noise / leak. and inverse hyperbolic curve on funds invested vs hip pocket return. Smart money is buy one all done st stock pricing and hopefully it comes with a bunch of factory parts. Good buyIng sir.

Agreed. I need some time with this to get my head around what it offers before any changes made, if at all. This has all the essential parts fitted but no transmission upgrade done and that was a known on purchase. Came with the usual box of receipts, a cam timing bar and crank lock, workshop manual etc.

Another interesting find is there is a knob cast into the front suspension upright that can rip the side out of your tyre if you choose the wrong one. Now have to read up threads on the right tyres.

Thanks, right now I'm only a stones throw away from you but heading home very soon. Good news about the tyres. The list of tyres that don't fit / work seems huge so always delighted to hear of those that do. I'll be due a set next year once I've changed the suspension. Order placed but there is a delay as always so unlikely to turn up until January.

Taking a long shot here, does anyone recognise these DV's? Just removed them from the RS6 and they are un-branded, nothing anywhere to indicate where they originate. Only the piston is a little different from the generic design, otherwise they are just a vanilla DV.

Briefly, after buying a car in the top 5-10%, there was still work to do. 16 years old so this is reality. Fair to say the PO was fastidious but equally they sometimes look right over some issues that jump out at a new person. The interior is as new, exterior very good with the normal paint marks from a non show car. Wheels reasonable but had been chipped in places. Certainly not the kerbing you see but done and touched up badly. I'd say that the body work met the description on the day so no complaints.

Mechanically, the usual. The older RS cars seem to attract dodgy mechanics. Stuff you won't find until you start stripping stuff down so not seen during an inspection. You can buy a bog standard Audi and it might be absolutely complete, not a bracket or part missing anywhere. Same age RS and there will be stuff. Strangely, money didn't generally seem to be an issue, quality parts used etc but some consumable parts were left to the death rattle, or maybe I'm fussy.

So to date, the following were needed to get through rego or to provide peace of mind at the start. A not insignificant sum to find just to get mobile.

    Bilstein Dampers
    Front bump stops
    front upper control arms
    Tyres Michelin PS4s
    Air Box grommets x 4
    Battery

Philips DRL (fog lights removed to fit Wagners)

Air Filters (replace BMC with paper)

    Bosch MAFs

    Apikol MAF seals
    Cabin filter
Dashcam adhesive pads,12 V sockets (refitting the dash cam)

    Replace Diverter valves

These were just non essential to round off the car.

Shevron Dash Mat (gauge mounting accessory to keep the car standard without damage)

    P3 Gauge
    Nylon boost hose & fittings

    SwissVax cleaner

    GPS unit
    h/light protectors
    A few parts from UK

    Spark Plugs

Already, it's obvious that the lower control arms will need replacing shortly. Decided to wait a few months and lessen the sticker shock. Most of the running gear has about half the life of my RS4, I'd say. The excess weight over the nose destroys the front suspension well inside 100,000 KM. Brakes etc as well. That and access are the two long term issues that drive up costs. Apparently the car has had a second auto transmission fitted some years ago so that's the last of the traditional issues taken care of in the short term at least.

Regrets, none, it's a great car. Basically, as people are still interested in them, the info here might help anyone looking at an example. I've seen some real dogs and can't imagine what it would cost to get them back on the boil. I could have driven this (with new tyres) for ages before it absolutely needed to have some stuff fixed. Then again, with the sort of car that might encourage brisk driving, it would not have been a controllable missile.

The longer you own one, the more you learn. This will probably go on for ages so almost impossible to list all the little bits that arise.
