Thread: A3 1.4 MY17 - 2-cyclinder mode engine/alternator whine

  1. Default A3 1.4 MY17 - 2-cyclinder mode engine/alternator whine

    Hi guys,

My first post here, looking for some advice on an electrical problem. I have the A3 1.4L 110kw sedan MY17, bought it new and it is now 6 months past warranty

When the engine ticks into 2-cylinder mode I get alternator whine through the digital dashboard console. There is a notable 'tick' when it switches to 2-cylinder mode and then the engine alternator sound (ie. noise gets louder with revving just like alternative whine) becomes quite apparent, noise disappears when the car switches back to 4 cylinder mode.

I initially thought it was through the speakers but after disconnecting the muiltimedia unit have ruled that out.

This problem started maybe a week after I installed an amp and sub in the car, so am thinking the disconnecting and reconnecting of the battery may have caused a problem ... I've disconnected the amp from the battery to test but the problem remains.

Anyone come across this or can give some advice before i take it in to Audi?

  2. Default I have similar issues.

I drive A3 2016 (2017 for VIN) Sedan 1.4ftsi. I noticed the similar issues. I bought this as second hand car. I realised this is happening as you say when the car is in 2 cylinder mode. The noise is louder when the car is in S mode than in D mode. The noise is so obvious when the gear is in S3-4. First dealer I bought the car from did not know what it is...even he said that is normal...bs..

I brought my car to German specialist...he said maybe something to do with turbo or engine...it is hard to tell from 1hr of looking the car...suggested me to bring my car back to the Audi i bought from....now trouble is travel restriction in Melbourne(I only have stat warranty)..called and they agreed me to bring the car into another audi dealer near my house (but the Audi(1st dealer) have to authorise the work or any repair)

So this Thursday my car will be checked by Richmond Audi. see what happens.

Update to the previous post...the issue was to do with"Charge Air Pressure Positioner (V465). The Richimond dealer identified this issue and waiting for the approval from the 1st dealer I bought a car from to fix with Stat Warranty. (No charge for diagnosis for this time). Richmond dealer service guy asked me if I want to pay for repair and get it reimbursed by the 1st dealer (which will cost 750). I said no. you guys can sort out the payment between the audi dealers.

Thanks Greenyosh! I hope that'll be similar to my problem - I'll take it to Richmond Audi once we get through lockdown. I was quoted $260 just for diagnosis so will call Richmond and see what they think.

I don't think my issue is in S mode as it's louder in 2 cyclinder mode and hardly noticeable in 4 cylinder mode. Definitely more noticeable in 3rd and 4th gear as that's when it goes into cruising mode.

Hi RebelOne...it happens in D mode as well. It is just more obvious in S mode. When engine in 4 c mode, it does not happen.

My car has not been fixed yet due to COVID.
