I'd always used the 5w30 LL Castrol Edge - a little bit more expensive but apparently the better oil.
In terms of that Shell Helix oil, it doesn't state that it meets the VW 504 507 standards so I would be choosing something else if I were you.
Morning All
Coming up to service time for the RS4 and looking at oil. In the past I have always used Castrol Edge 5w-30. Pretty sure I have always used the A3/B4 oil however the Repco and Supercheap sites now say that it doesn't suit the car (only the "LL" does), whereas Sparesbox says it does. Go figure.
Anyway, I see on Repco this oil is on sale and wondered if anyone was using it?

5L of LL has just gone on sale on Supercheap, $57, perfect :)

I think there is now 10L containers available now too - Repco should stock them, likely available at other retailers too.
Use a 5w40 VW502. Castrol Edge 5w40 I put in my B7 RS4. I got it on sale for $39 for 6L at Repco last month
You only use the VW504 5w30 LL spec if you're keen on longer service intervals, and if your car is newer (which the B7 RS4 is not). That is what the LL means from what I've read. I put in 5w40 because I change my oil every 7500-10000km. Older car with higher mileage, the slightly thicker oil helps.
All the information on what oil to use in the owners manual. It says VW502 or VW504 depending on service intervals as I have mentioned
Has anybody here used Liquimoly Top Tec 4200 5w-30 - just bought 10L and plan on using it in my next oil change. I've heard good things about these oils and keen to try.
It's VW 504.00 / 507.00
Is there a big difference between 5w-30 and 5w-40 on these engines? I know that people say as long as it meets the grade it doesn't matter but what are your experiences?
I'm trying liqui moly 4100 5w-40 which is the spec for the RS6. Seems OK, no comments either way atm. Most comments about oil brand and grade are from enthusiastic users who don't have any quals that would stand up in a strong wind. The factory spend millions on testing and confirming the grade of oil to meet the operating conditions. The story about why the 505.01 grade was chosen for the RS6 is interesting and the supercession to 504 spec was more to do with availability than better outcomes. You may get a better outcome by changing spec and or grade but as always, it's at your cost. That said, a swag of oils may meet the same spec but some will be better than others and the real battle is to find out which 504 spec oil is the best.

I highly recommend only using the castrol LL3
The standard LongLife you can get at repco is ok but the 4.2 is a very big engine. LongLife3 has a higher flash point and a lower ash content then the regular LongLife.
The LongLife3 is made for Audi.
The VAG group did not collaborate with any other companies then Castrol.
If anyone’s interested I can get it for $240 delivered but I need to buy 2 or more drums to get it at that price. That’s about $60 per 5L which is about the same you’d pay at super cheep on special for the regular LL.
