    Default B5 RS4 engine upgrade

About 10 years ago a member on here had an engine failure in his RS4. He opted to import an engine from the UK instead of repairing his to get back on the road as quickly as possible. The complete engine and gear box sat around for a while before finding a new home with another forum member, where it sat again before I picked up the package around 2015-16. The time has come, the walrus said....

The engine is being stripped to a bare block, at a leisurely pace, before going in for machining.

Over that time I have been gathering some parts to get the build to an appropriate standard. 82mm Woessner forged pistons

    Manifolds from the UK

    plus 15 clutch

There is one item I have not completely decided on, solid lifter cams. I have the set and now need to make a choice. Maintenance intensive but does away with the shortfalls of the hydraulic lifter design.

and Falcos big gearbox lives to see another day in this car.

At this time it's a toss up between pauter and standard rods. I'm not looking for huge HP so standard rods would suffice ...or cover all the options. Once the block is complete and re-assembled, final choices on turbos, injectors and the like will be made.

Nah, only just got back from a 3000 km road trip. Can hardly expect to be spending Easter having a break. Part of it was going to be in quarantine anyway having brushed the greater Brisbane area on the way home.

    Critical stats:
Insects various imbedded over the car - Thousands
    Distance covered - 2950 Km
    Fuel used - 351.19 Ltr
    Avg consumption - 11.9 Ltr / 100 Km
    Stone chips - a few
    Bird strike - One
    Oil consumption - Nil
    Fault codes - Nil

Up through Lightning Ridge and St George to a place way outside Brisbane, back through Inverell where we had a few days R&R while the roads dried out and thence home to face the fluid situation of whether we were glowing in the dark or not. Happy to say that after preliminary testing on the nose and throat, nothing is amiss.

So, trolling you, no. Probably losing a finger nail though so I'll have a bit of self pity to make up for it.

Nice! Except for the bugs to wash off. Were you in the RS6?

Yes, the RS4 ground clearance is a fraction too little to get into the property. Both do the long haul well and the RS6 is very laid back for trips. Ticks all my boxes.

Back on topic. Removing the crankshaft bolt has probably more online videos than most and some of the methods are frightening. Happy to say that the bolt was removed with very little difficulty so now time to go onto the engine stand for the sump and crank removal before passing the block over for boring.

    Progress, fully stripped.

The block is in good condition except for the score in N0. 6.

The bearings had some wear which was a little unexpected and the oil pump chain tensioner was badly worn. Now to join the queue for machining before the rebuild commences.

what are the plans? Bore it out and put in bigger pistons, or sleeve it?

Standard bore 81.5mm, intend opening out just a little to 82mm so 0.5mm overbore to suit the new pistons. I doubt that you could resleeve this block with any safety if you expected to see anywherer near 600 HP. I've been accumulating stuff for years to get this done so I have almost everything I need. A few gaskets are NLA so some frantic work to sort that is in hand. Otherwise all is going smoothly.

    Hi Tony,
Whats the goal here? I see a few pics of parts, but you are being a bit cryptic (or I cant read it as my mind works in logic only and data must be input correctly or I cant Kompute) or in other words, if we may comment, where are you going with this? "been accumulating stuff for years to get this done" get what done?
By the way Rockauto has a pretty good choice of NLA parts. :)
