Default 2014 A4 B8 Right Main Beam Dipped Error - How to know if light or ballast?

Hi all, I can see from other posts that this error seems to relate to a light or ballast issue with my headlight, but how do I ascertain if it is one or the other. I don't have access to a device that would give me a code without going to Audi.

Is there a telltale sign or something I should be on the lookout for?

Also, does anyone know of any reasons why I should use aftermarket for either the ballast or the bulb should one or both need repairing? Is there any coding of the ballast required or is it just the two plugs?

I don't want to take to Audi for something minor I can do myself, because I can see this getting real pricey real fast.

Aftermarket can always be a hit and miss if you don't have any referrals.

I would look to second hand at best.

In regards to a scanner, where abouts are you, maybe somebody on here can help?

Thank you. Absolutely spot on about aftermarket.

    I'm in Cairns.

I would swap sides to test each component. Start with the globe and then try the ballast.

Done and it was just the bulb, only issue I ran into was I got a little rough with a push through retainer on the front plastic so its gone forever.

    Thanks for the tip.
