8R SQ5 3.0 BiTDI Diesel: Airbox, Cooling & General Aftermarket Upgrade Options?

Hi all,

I have an Australian-delivered Audi SQ5 8R 3.0 V6 BiTDI diesel, 2013 build / 2014 compliance.

The car has already had major maintenance done, including timing chains, injectors, tappets, water pumps and related work. I’m now looking at the next stage of sensible upgrades.

At the moment the factory airbox is damaged. I can buy the OEM replacement through VAG, but before I spend money on a standard replacement, I wanted to ask whether anyone has found a better aftermarket option for the BiTDI platform.

This is the diesel BiTDI, not the 3.0T supercharged petrol SQ5, so I’m trying to avoid the usual CTS/IE/APR petrol intake rabbit hole unless someone has actually made something work on the diesel.

Areas I’m considering:
- Airbox replacement or upgraded intake
- Radiator and charge cooling improvements
- Additional oil cooler
- Engine bay harness tidy-up
- Extra monitoring/logging via sensors or Raspberry Pi-style setup

I’m comfortable doing some of the electronics and integration myself. For example, I’ve already upgraded the MMI spinning hard drive to an industrial SSD.

The main ask is:

Before I buy the standard VAG airbox, has anyone found proper aftermarket parts or a better upgrade path for the 8R SQ5 3.0 BiTDI?

Interested in first-hand experience, part numbers, supplier links, photos, suitable donor parts, or workshops that actually know these cars, or literally anything, i often feel like i was the only person who has purchased one of these :)

I just bought an SQ5 launch edition and looking to tune stage 1. Did you do the major maintenance of timing chains etc yourself? If so where did you source the parts? If not which shop did the work?

always good to replace a airbox with an aftermarket one in my book :-)

There seems to be stuff all for aftermarket intakes for the diesel, but there does seem to be a 'better' pod filter..

if it really does anything for you, I'm not sure. Maybe reach out to the apr or other chip suppliers etc who do the chipping and see what they recommend.
Hey thanks for this.
i have the K&N pod already on the Car.
yeah there doesn't seem to be a SINGLE THING to get off the shelf, or even pay for. at this rate, i'll be going to tafe to learn to weld.
