A4 / A5 / Q5 Q5 2.0 TFSI Burning Oil Problems - Information Here

this oil problem is sending me crazy!!

its using so much oil its coming out the back end! Anybody else getting an oil stained rear bumper, and also my low oil light doesn't work???!!!!!

what a POS!

Are you blowing white smoke at the same time? If so, then it's more likely your piston rings are gone.

Or another issue would be your turbo seals are gone. But you should be able to feel the difference in performance if this was the case.

Either way, your engine needs a rebuild. quickly get it done before your warranty expires, or else it's not going to be cheap!

Good luck and let us know how you go.

no white smoke, car is running very rich though. Performance is actually the same, but during the last oil consumption test I think the mechanics turned off a series of sensors, it use to tell me when I have to top up.

Now it doesn't, by the time I notice the extra oil/fuel on my rear bumper is when I noticed there was no oil level warning, is it even possible to disable the low oil light?

Hi guys,

Sorry to just jump in here but I can offer some comments about this issue.

My 2008 2.0TFSI A4 B8 was drinking 0.77L/1000km. After many months of trying different solutions, Audi actually replaced my pistons and rings. Yes open heart surgery! Since doing this I haven't had the light come on in 5 months and nearly 8000km.

This was done under warranty (car was still under warranty) however it is a very well known problem to them so I would suggest jumping up and down if your car is out of warranty.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask any questions.

No they cant turn of the oil warning light, its built in to the bonnet switch to resest when the bonnet is opened and the level is topped up, and a general FYI the warning light is not the total oil level but the last 1 litre of capacity.

As I mentioned on another thread about consumption, if you have oil consumption issues and the car is out of warranty you cant just rock up to a dealer and jump up and down and expect them to fix it, you would have to go back to where you have had consumption tests done and even then its up to the dealer if they want to repair it or not.

I will definitely jump up and down, weather they choose to fix it or not.

The fact the tolerance is 0.5 litre per 1000 kms, in theory you can burn off all the oil in the car before the next service is ridiculous!!

From memory it burn't off about .4 litre pre 1000 kms in my last oil consumption test, obviously there was a sign of a problem.

Its unheard off in a modern car, whilst other car manufacturers do suffer from high oil consumption, none of them have specified a tolerance.

Unless anybody knows different?

yes mate, some Beemers are also known for this. Eg: http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=610446

Can I ask everyone when their low oil indicator comes on?

I clearly remember before bringing my car into Audi the oil light level usual came on and told me when to top up 1 litre. (shown in the first photo, used as a reference when it use to tell me to top up)

Now the second photo, the bar is indicating nil, and clearly show no warning on my dash, nor a message to tell me to top up oil either, I clearly remember this light/warning use to come on the second I turn on my car too.

Can I obtain everybody else's input, Audi service said my warning light is working correctly??!!!

Hey mate it happened to me as we'll with me it showed no oil in it funny enough 2 days later the light came up on the dash board and said fill 1 litre to keep driving so I'd just be patient wait another 1-2 days and see how you go

Mine currently looks like the first photo but no warning light has come on yet which is weird cause it should have already. Mine has gone in for stage 2 test and it failed. I wonder if they did something with the oil level sensor

What's involved for the stage 2 test?

Stage 1 - replace pvc hose, top engine up with oil and come back after 1000km

Stage 2 - they check how much oil was consumed in the 1000km and if it's too much, then they book it in for pistons. Not sure what else they do

Mine was 0.86L per 1000kms. They are pretty booked out at the zetlands centre so I have to wait until April to take it in.

thanks for the info.

I suggest everybody make a complaint to consumers affairs victoria, or your local consumer advocate, only takes 5 minutes.

This is the only way it will be highlighted and protect your investment after the crap 3 year warranty period.

Otherwise car manufacturers will keep going back in time with problems, soon we'll all be relegated back to the horse and cart!

hey guys,

have owned my car for about 5-6 weeks now, iv had the oil level drop from full to 0 in four weeks. so i took it in for a stage 1 check. i drove out last wednesday and oil level has dropped to just about half, i can't beleive it. my cousin works at audi and says that ill be going in for a stage 2 change, might have to get it done asap as i have till mid jan to get it done before warranty runs out. my car has 38,500 klms on it.

also prior to them doing the stage 1 test, my car sounded diesely or trucky i knew it was a bit funny but was told it was normal by the other car yard where purchased, but when i jumped in on wednesday after picking up the car, i was suprised to hear that my car sounds normal as a petrol engine should, dont know what else they did but im very happy about that. they also reset my gearbox as i told them that when i reverse, stop, then put into drive and take off it sounds like it kind of revs out alot like it has a stall converter on it. it only happened twice before that but today happened again. don't know to much about these gearboxes to know whats normal and whats not???

cheers steve

Extend warranty or not?!

Hi Guys,

Been thinking about extending the warranty, not sure if it's worth it. I've had my car checked for oil consumption and was told that it was all within Audi tolerances. Going back for a Stage 1 assessment again in Feb for a double check.

I’ve been quoted $2300 roughly, for two years extended warranty(in Melbourne). Do you guys think it’s worth having this cover for peace of mind? or am I better off waiting it out and paying the repairs later on in a case that something does go wrong and need a engine fix?

Seems like a lot of people here have the same issues, just wondering what steps you guys have made.

Thanks,
JR.

Q5 Oil Burning- with a Twist!!!

Hi All

Well here goes with my Q5 oil burning story with a twist.

i bought my wife's Q5 2.0 TSFI S-tronic in Aug this year from Audi West Brisbane. It's plated 2011 but only had 30km on the clock and was sold to me as a "new" car.

All seemed in order until at approx 3500km the oil warning came on while the mrs was driving the car. She immediately called me and I called the dealership. They advised me to just top it up with the required 1L and it will "settle-in", implying its a running in matter. After some investigation on the net I uncovered the issue. I than called the service manager at Audi West Brisbane and enquired about the issue. He agreed to conduct the stage one changes, which he called "installation of an oil separation system". They went ahead ad did the changes and notified me that I had to be back in 1000km time in order to have it checked (difficult since Bundaberg is 400km away from Bris and the wife does around 200km per week).

Now it gets interesting. So I am about mid way through the week after the work has been done and making plans to get back down again at our costs etc, to Bris for the follow up when I get a phone call from the service manager. "Um..... Is your car chipped?" Yes I reply why? Well Audi Australia will not validate the warranty on the oil consumption issue as you have modified the ecu!!!!!!!!!!

Well you could have blown me over with a feather. The Superchips was installed 2 days before the vehicle went down for the work, there is NO POSSIBLE WAY THAT THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED THE OIL CONSUMPTION. Let alone the fact that they had admitted that this was a well known problem.

In subsequent conversations on this topic with the service manager, I think he thought I was an idiot or some ignoramus that knew nothing about cars. I asked him how they could possibly link the superchips to the oil consumption issue? His Comments, "ecu upgrades increase the compression ration of the engine".... Can you believe this clown, not it increases boost (which in any event could not be linked to inc oil consumption), he says it increases compression ratio, and this is the service manager. I have no hope......

the situation at the moment is that I'm waiting for his call back alternatives. 1) if they reflash back to standard will the warranty be re-instated? 2) if Superchips return the original file into the ecu will they re-instate my warranty? 3) how do they justify avoiding the warranty repair on a well known issues over an ecu upgrade that was done 2 days before the repair work was carried out.

If anyone in the forum could maybe direct me to an Audi Australia representative or more senior person. I believe that it's time to take this to the next level.

Any assistance and advice would be great. :_b:

Thanks

Welcome to chipped Audi and service hell.

I wont go into the details of my issues as it would only make me angry, but I was lucky that they did the testing and performed their 'fix' with the piston rings and ECU reflash before they detected that it was chipped. By the way, their 'fix' fixed nothing as I still have oil issues around every 2000kms now. I guess that's better that the 700kms I was getting before.

But, thanks to months of drama I can answer a few of your questions :)

1 - Reflash back to stock. At this point it doesn't matter as the car is flagged, so even going back to stock wont help. I actually went down the path of a new ECU (that failed anyway as Audi didn't know how to fit it, wtf!) and Audi stated that this probably wouldn't clear the flags.
2 - As above. The car is now flagged.
3 - Because they can. You could take them to court, and you would probably win but that's a whole saga in itself.

Curious to see how you get on. At this point i'm so over Audi and their bull**** that I doubt i'll get another one.

I specifically joined the forum to comment in this thread...

Has anyone questioned the oil the dealer is using? I had a similar problem with my old Subaru EJ25T motor and it never used oil until the Dealer went from using Mobil 1 to Castrol. The car was really close to the tolerances of what Subaru had set and almost had the motor rebuilt until I looked at the invoices seeing the change in oil type. I spoke to the dealer and they put the car onto Castrol Edge and it went from using 1L per 2,000kms to 1L per 12,500kms. I still wasn't happy with this so I change the oil out with Penrite SIN (no I don't work for them) and it went to less than 500ml over 10,000kms. I found the oil would last and then just start rapidly disappearing once it reached its end of life.

I have owned a few cars and I have found that force inducted motors need good oil with the Aussie heat and the dealer is only going to use the oil they get the best bulk buy on. Also note there are many varieties of oils with the same name in particular Mobil 1 and make sure to match the oil weights correctly or mix with different types of oil or weights.

Of course if you motor is using crap loads of oil then still get it checked by the dealer for a faulty motor but its not just Audi that has this problem, I know of at least Holden and Subaru having the same issues.

Just my two cents...
