Any tips for buying a 2010 4F series A6 allroad 3.0TDi?

As my C5 A6 quattro Avant 2.8 is now at 200 000km and 20 years old (and bits are starting to become irreparable, roof join rusted through which only became apparent 2 years after rust warranty expired ..., front seats collapsing et cetera) and a complete rebuild would be just uneconomical, I'm looking at getting a C6/4F series A6 allroad 3.0TDi as a replacement (looking at around the AU$15 000 mark).

Because of my somewhat peculiar demands in car colour (almost any colour except black and preferably with with a light coloured interior) and kms (not greater than 100 000km) the field is not as wide as it first might appear when looking online.

Does anyone have any tips or items/problems to look out for in particular? I've noticed some recently for sale that have mentioned that there have been repairs to manifolds and fuel delivery systems, are these problematic in particular?

Any hints gratefully received. Cheers.
 
I think airbags/suspension are always the ones to look out for on the allroads..

Hi, thanks for that. I was under the impression (obviously mistaken), that the air suspension system problems of the C5 were resolved by the time the C6 series came out. Cheers.
 
you could be right, I'm on experts on them at all, but though that's what was discussed here. I'm sure those who actually know what they are talking about can chime in :wave:

Any car model you choose may have inherent faults but not every car has them to any extent. My C5 allroad has had a few issues, but on reflection they have been quite acceptable. Air suspension is a consumable. Even the first set of aftermarket Arnott air bags eventually failed but the second set are re-designed and have worked well for some years now. I'm running a few 2.7 so economies of scale help me. The TDI engine is everywhere so plenty made but again, you'll have more problems on spec if you drive short distances. Same applies to any diesel. Europe is now moving away from them due to emission issues. It's not a hugely expensive buy and as you say, you have yet to find the one that ticks the boxes.

Thanks for the reply and your views on the Arnott replacements for the air suspension (I assume they must make them for the C6/4F series too then?).

The air suspension being a consumable doesn't concern me so much (twenty two years a Citröen owner, although only replaced the green spheres twice in that time and was easy to do as they stick out like the proverbial ...).

As I am down the far south coast, once in my hands, the "new" car's shortest trip will be a 20km 80km/hr, low to nonexistent traffic, 1 traffic light trip, so it's to be hoped that the diesel can cope with that.

Just as an aside, does anyone have any views on the best place to look for cars for sale online? I'm currently using carsales.com.au but perhaps there are others that are not immediately obvious. Cheers.

Interesting ownership path, you're unlikely to be phased by an Audi then. No everyone is so lucky to live in low density areas, I'm much the same and have difficulty in getting over the radical change when visiting the big smoke. Finally, try Gumtree. Not an obvious choice but I bought a car through them 5 years ago and my good luck was that the business chose to advertise through Gumtree and it was and still is a ripper. It's no reflection on the car where the owner chooses to do business.

Oh, the ownership path starts back in 1970 with the first (AC series) Fiat 124 coupes (before they brought out the second series with flabby steering and soft suspension), then to a couple of suicide door 595 Abarths, a Renault Gordini (utterly unbreakable), an NSU Ro80 (rebuilt the engine on it, but as an impecunious student, couldn't afford to fuel it regularly), then came a couple of Citröens before moving on to the C5 A6 quattro Avant about 12 years ago ...

As for repairing any Audi, I'm afraid my self-repair days are long gone, I passed on my tools with the last Citröen, no, leave it all to Justin at Audcare in Artarmon now, although that requires a trip to Sydney. I did use a BMW specialist in Fyshwick once, nice place and kindly gave me loan cars for the week or so the car was with them (huge BMW X series things, turned me off BMW completely, sitting that high up in several tonnes of metal just felt weird and utterly unsafe), but I feel happier handing it to someone that is more aligned with Audi.

Had a Fiat 124 Coupe mid 70's. Loved it but it always seemed to be going faster than it looked. Police loved it too.:( The car purchase was my first foray onto Gumtree. Last place I would have looked but ended up there by mistake. End result was it was a good buy so happy no matter where it was advertised.
