Excessive Oil Consumption

Jim Koukoutaris

New member
I have been having discussions with Audi Head Office about excessive oil consumption in my 2012 Q3 on the back of a class action settled in the USA for this very issue. Full service history, average kms/year travelled

link here
As expected Audi has said that its not their problem and have quoted me nearly $14,000 to replace the pistons/rings

Feedback would be appreciated on possible reputable mechanics that could do this work. Based in Southern Sydney, but happy to travel. If I'm going to pay, I would rather not give anything to Audi

If you have had the same issue (as it covers vehicles from 2012-2017) reach out to Audi.

sorry to hear that.

not sure of southern places, but you could try European autotech in Sydney and see if they will quote you.

I'm assuaging that the engine has to come out to do it, but they might be able to do it by removing the head and doing the bottom end work from below.

I take it that you don't intend trying to get Audi to pay. USA laws are very much more customer focused (like the VW emissions scandal warranties that cover a ton of stuff that we can only dream of)

12 year old car, not a special model, not really worth a lot. I can say this as many of my cars are twice as old. Labour and parts are deadly expensive and you can guarantee you'll find extra parts that will need to be replaced if you are to get any warranty on the repair.

Simply, is it going to be worth it?. It's your money and your choice but I would think it over, even if you tried to sell it on after the engine was repaired, no one will offer you anything like what you have invested in it.

Agree 100% with the above.

If it's a significant problem to you I'd be tempted to cut my losses and move the car on and buy something else.

Thanks for the feedback

Yes, I have tried with Audi for some months with no luck. Lots of emails and promises but in the end, you get "sorry, not our problem"

We have had the car since new and no complaints until this issue. You always know when there is something fishy when the dealership wont give you a quote on the day you fail the oil consumption test and tell you that it needs to go to head office for 'advice' I dear say there is an internal note within Audi that stems from the Class Action in the USA, to refer such issues to them first. We know VW has history ....

Currently trying to balance the repair cost against the purchase of a new car. All about timing

What is your actual oil consumption and is it impacting on driving performance. Back in the day you added oil in proportion to fuel as engines always consumed oil. In the short term you could probably enjoy the car with limited to no side effects. Longer term the emissions control parts will take a beating. We have come to expect virtually no oil consumption but it wasn't always thus.

Oil Consumption Repair
I owned a 2010 A3 1.8tfsi CDAA EA888 that had excessive oil consumption and was in the process of doing Stage 1 Oil Consumption Testing via Audi Centre Canberra. The car was written off by a massive hailstorm before the test was completed. My advice would be to park your car outside and hope it gets totalled.

Give these BG Australia guys a shout.
I would love to hear if you have any feedback. This dynamic methodology wasn't available to us at the time my vehicle was being tested.
I did have some success in reducing oil consumption by using upper cylinder cleaners and decoking treatments, such as Subaru Upper Cylinder Cleaner.

From personal experience of my 2010 A3 8P 1.8tfsi CDAA EA888 with Audi Centre Canberra, it is best to confirm all phone conversations in writing, citing what was stated. Log all emails and CC to Audi Head office with your Case Number.
Here's a highlighted excerpt summary breakdown of my emails and phone conversations with the manager and service advisor at Audi Centre Canberra {ACC) to ensure clarity and address any potential corrections:
Note that details of the Oil Consumption Test were never confirmed in writing 😆
Oil Consumption Test
PART ONE [KEY POINTS]

1. Audi Technician will scan the car to check for any system faults, drain the oil and weigh it, before refilling to the exact level.
- [*Clarification needed]: Specified 5W30 Full Synthetic Oil and a new oil filter may be used during Part One unless otherwise specified.
2. Drive the car for up to 1,000 km without adding any oil OR until the Oil Level warning light appears, whichever occurs first.
3. When the Low Oil Light illuminates, drive to the Audi Centre Canberra for the continuation of Part One as soon as possible.
4. Continuation of Part One involves draining the engine oil and weighing it again, to determine the rate of oil consumption against kilometers traveled, before Part Two can be completed.
5. If it fails the Part One Test, meaning the vehicle has higher than acceptable oil consumption and exceeds the manufacturer's specification, it will go to Stage Two.
6. There is a total cost of $214.50 for the test. [Jan 10, 2020]

PART TWO [KEY POINTS]
1. If it fails Part One and if the vehicle is due for its normal service or close to it, Audi Centre Canberra will then quote for whatever repairs are required.
2. If a service is due or close, you will be asked to pay that amount in advance before proceeding further.
3. A determination will be made for the amount that Audi Australia will possibly offer to contribute toward the costs of repair based on service history.
4. As Audi Centre Canberra Manager David Cooper stated, this will depend on the age, mileage, and service history of the vehicle.

*Note: It might be helpful to confirm the specifics of the oil and filter change during Part One with [Audi Centre Canberra].
