Firmware/software upgrade of MMI3G High to MMI3G Plus

Update ...

The developer, mj131, is now mainly looking for cars with drive select or air suspension to further involve in development if anyone is interested ...

You would need to provide a VCDS (or equivalent) scan of your car so he can make the correct firmware/software package for your vehicle ... if suitable, he would then guide you in RT through the installation process (not as onerous as it might sound).

Contact him either by PM or through this thread ...

Unsure if anyone is interested, but over here, mj131 has made a firmware/software upgrade of MMI3G High to MMI3G Plus and is looking for different vehicles to upgrade from MMI3G High (offered at no charge).

Yes, I've done the upgrade (screen grabs at the above link), but yet to install the ROW maps.

From discussions with them, I gather the firmware/software has been for sale in some countries in Europe since 2023.

Big news - I'd always wondered whether someone would crack this one day.
Yes, and apparently, map installation does not require activators or unblockers, and in fact, mj131 warns specifically against attempting to use them ... so, in theory, just start the "standard" install and it works ... guess I'll find out when I summon the courage to try it.

As the screen grabs do not appear to be working (for other people, worked fine for me), I've deleted my posts there & will post the screen grabs here ...

OK, here are some screen grabs in no particular order, only comment I make is the "Green Menu" is now purple ... unfortunately, at least on my MMI screen, some items are unclear ...

DrGer pointed me to a simple method last year which provides great clear images which do not require a camera or 'phone ... "With a FAT32 SD in slot 1, press and hold the [<<] and [>>] console keys at the same time until the console LEDs start to flash (about 3-5 seconds). This writes a PNG file of the current MMI display to the SD card in slot 1. Preferred for documenting system issues, in my opinion."

Just a comment on the time difference for eastern states of AU, NSW, TAS & VIC are AEDT, QLD, for "reasons" do not observe daylight savings ...

Bluetooth 'phone link took a few times but eventually recognised it ... yes, 1 bar (No Service & SOS Only also common) on mobile is par for the course where I am (regardless of provider, I have different SIMs from 3 providers) 2˚ to destruction of telecoms infrastructure during 2019-2020 fires ... best reception was during the 3 months post fires when they installed mobile transceivers 500 metres up the road opposite the ambo station, then removed them when the tower≈ 3km away was "repaired" ...

OK, run out of space to add anymore screen grabs ... TBC

Screen grabs of proximity sensors ... (noticed that media/radio volume is muted almost to 0 once reverse is selected, I gather that this was adjustable before, however there does not appear to be an obvious way to perform this now).

Update to media/radio volume when reverse selected, it needs to be enabled via the "Green (now purple) menu" under ParkingSystem which has to be set to 7 in Car -> CarMenuOperation. It will become active after exiting "Green (now purple) menu" and rebooting the MMI.

OK, the second stage of the update is complete (ROW map installation) which was completed in 16 minutes (the AU map data is quite small).

Everything appears to be working as designed/promised on the tin. Impressive that no requirement to invoke the User-defined method & go digging to look for & select to activate various sub-menu items, just click Standard in Software update & off it goes.

Further, after reboot, no activators/scripts/unblockers required, the navigation works immediately. The only hiccup being it needs calibration for height, as it believes I'm 150 metres below sea level ... I am at sea level ... I think I would have noticed if I were that far below, I believe it will self-calibrate that once I start to drive & it starts talking to the various satellites.

Some installation steps screen grabs ...

Once in Red Engineering menu, select Update ...

Start ...

Screen_11_240224_0918_0026.png

When install finishes, select Cancel documentation ... it will check & reboot, you are done, no activators/scripts or unblockers required ...
