Michelin PS3 vs ??

Exie

New member
Hi Folks,

So, my wifes car is up for some tires. After googling around, I read enough good things about the Michelin's so I phoned around, prices seem to sit around $182-$200

Of course, all the stores recommended some other Tyre. But one got my attention, it's a Continental Contact Comfort 5, much cheaper at $159 and the man in the store swears they are as good if not better than the Michelin's.

What do you all think ?

Size is 205/55/R16

Currently running Yokohama C-drive which are kind of average. So looking for a step up.

Hi Exie
I can't say that I am familiar with either tyre but generally speaking, when the sales guy tries to push a cheaper option and tells you it's a better product, it's probably because he will end up making a higher profit margin or is getting some form of rebate.

the question is better than the PS3s at what? comfort and noise perhaps? i have used PS3s and i found them to be the best for grip in dry or wet out of all the tyres I've tried (Goodyear F1, Continental Sport Contact 2, Dunlop SP, Bridgestone ER300 and Turanza)

Thanks fellas,

Yep, sounds like PS3's are the way to go. I'm not sure why I considered the salesman recommendation.

I'll give 'em a call on Monday and book it in for a set.

An update. Seems no one can get Michelin Pilot Sport 3 (PS3) in the size we need. One shop said 2 month lead time. The other said the stopped making them.

The original shop then offered me Michelin Primacy 3 ST's for the same price citing its a better tire.

I'm not sold on the whole quiet/comfort thing. It's no comfort when your car is wrapped around a pole somewhere. Anyone have an opinion on Primacy 3 ST's before I phone the guy back and cancel everything.

Tim, personally I'd go with a more performance based tire. Sure it will wear faster but the softer compound will net you far better grip.
Have you considered the continental sport contact? Or maybe even the Dunlop sport maxx plenty of other great tyres to choose from. Also what size are you after

I've had 3 sets of Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics and they have all been brilliant, and typically cheaper than most other high spec tyres.

Further, they have a massive rim protector on the edge, so not only do they offer a bit better rim protection than some others, but they also look a lot chunkier than they really are

Out of interest, what car is this for Exie?

This is for my wife's golf, It's a Mk IV.

I know its not a race car. But every time I buy a "cheaper" set of tires I regret it. So I stopped caring about noise and tire life and cost. Now I just want something that keeps it planted and does a good job.

The Golf doesn't benefit from Audi's Quattro system so those front wheels can get over worked pretty easily.

I cancelled the order for the Pemacy 3 ST's. All the reviews and the website all talk about how quiet, comfortable and how long they last. When your car is wrapped around a light pole, they are the last things on your mind.

I've had Turanza's before and disposed of them after 6 months. They didnt inspire any confidence for me.
I'll see what I can find with the Goodyear Eagle F1's or Conti's and go from there. Pitty the Conti Sport Contact 5 doesnt seem to come in the size we need. Maybe the Conti premium Contact are ok ?

Quick update. I'm booked in for some Goodyear Eagle F1's.

I cant get the Asymmetrics's in the size we need, so getting Directional 5's instead. I know ya cant rotate them left/right but I'm ok with that.
According to Google, the D5's are pretty good and compete with the PS3's.

Cool. I recently bought Contis Premium Contact 2 for my missus' Polo. $195 a pop for 215/40R17 from BJ.

I also found that if like me would like to adhere to OEM speed/load rating, the choice of tyres can reduce substantially.

I did consider the Conti Premiums but found better feedback on the Gy D5's.
I wasn't paying much attention to the speed ratings, but after checking the D5's are within spec (needs H@210 but tires are W@270). I'm up for $160ea which seems like a bargain.

We've had Conti Contacts on several of our cars, & they've been excellent. They are standard fitting on the 21" rims of our RSQ3, so we'll definitely be replacing them with same when the time comes. However, with a 21' rim size, I'm not looking forward to the cost.

Old thread revival, but my 2c for what it is worth.

I've had Contis as OE fitment on a number of cars, and have also fitted them as a replacement tyre when the time came for new rubber.

I was relatively happy with some of the early Conti Sport Contact (CSC variants), but a good number of years ago replaced OE CSC3s with CSC5s and was very disappointed in the wear rates of the CSC5s. Since then I have no longer been using Contis and depending on the car would either go a Michelin or Pirelli tyre instead as my first preference.

I've always used pzero on my cars for 10+ years.

I'm not sure why (probably a friend) told me to give the PS4's a go, and I've been very happy with them. I think they have been slightly (but noticeably) better in the wet and less prone to understeer... but that could just be I'm driving better/safer as I get older!

Next to wives, tyres seem to be the most polarizing topic out there. Choose what you like, tread carefully when the going gets tough and don't abuse them and the brand you like will do you well.

I am running PZeros in my Q5. Nice tyres. I have used PS3/4 before and loved them. Conti was okay but very soft tyres so only lasted lessthan 16K kms. In my books, all very good tyres.
