So I am on the my audi com website and have my car there, but when I try to download the latest maps it tells me I have used my quota of free map updates. My maps are from 2018/2019 and it doesn't seem its ever been updated. It is a 2019 S3 so is still within the 3 year period of having free map updates. I am not too worried as I use waze/android auto all the time but thought I would at least try to get them sort of recent.

To update the Navi map after your 6 free updates, you can buy the map at Audi or unlock the MMI and download the map from VW website.
sadly any map downloaded from any person from its account is linked to its VIN so it won’t work on other cars

Has anyone encountered this error on the Audi map update site recently? Trying to understand if it’s an issue on the Audi end or mine.

How do you unlock the mmi to take maps from VW? i have a 2017 A5, any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi, not sure if this is the correct place to be enquiring, but whilst I understand map updates in EU (for MMI 3G High) are quite regular, allegedly a few times each year, when are AU ones normally available (mine are still the original ones from 2011, although firmware is up to date at 01/03/2023 as HNav_EU_K0257_6_D1)?

Cheers, all the best, Peter

Problems with MMI 3G High map update to version 5.13.4

As I can't find any information elsewhere on OzAudi re the "older" MMI systems (specifically MMI 3G High) for map updates & how to resolve any problems, I guess I'll ask here for help & or directions to more specific information.

The car is a 2011 A6 allroad with a MMI 3G High system, whose firmware I updated to the most recent (to the best of my knowledge) which is HNav_EU_K0257_6_D1, & the map update that I attempted to install was 5.13.4, see screen grab.

Log of firmware and map updates IMG_3198s.jpg

It appears that I’ve run into two problems after the attempted map update of 5.13.4 … the SD card used was a brand new, never opened SanDisk Extreme 32GB FAT32 formatted card (same as the 16GB card used for the successful firmware update earlier in the year).

The first, after the nav tries to initialise after rebooting, it says it is blocked, see screen grab (I installed the map licence after I installed the maps, a point the vendor was keen to point out on their "how to install map updates" page & FAQ as the reason for the "blocked" message).

Nav data blocked IMG_3073s.jpg

When I check to make sure the licence is installed by attempting to install the licence, it tells me it’s already installed … see screen grab.

Map licence already installed IMG_3101s.jpg

The second problem is that the AMI no longer recognises that my iPod (latest available update, tried with different cables & also different devices such as iPhones which are also up to date with their software) is connected, power goes to it as well as the CD/DVDs (which I can hear moving their disc load mechanisms) & SD cards, but the AMI no longer sees any of them after the map update, CD/DVD & music files on an SD card don't appear either (nothing apart from jukebox is recognised which has nothing on it or any way to put anything on it), see screen grabs. The 'phone system via Bluetooth & radio still work.

No device connected IMG_3076s.jpg

I did the firmware update back at the end of February 2023 and everything (iPod, ‘phone, radio) had been running fine since then. The only change has been the attempted map update.

As an aside, prior to the rebooting after map installation, the map appeared on the screen (showing the correct position of the car) and the iPod was working (although the map seemed to have some of the normal screen overlay with the 4 corner grey selection quadrants visible. There was no map database prior, since I deleted it from the green menu as recommended by the vendor prior to the new map update, so what appeared on the screen was not the old iteration of the map, rather it was the newer map, 5.13.4 (I’d checked the old map was gone after deleting the database in the green menu by selecting Navigation and it did not show a map). I was also surprised at how fast the map update went. I'd seen reports of it taking hours and needing to keep the engine running or the battery on an external charger, but mine seemed to have taken only 12 minutes (1303-1315hrs) see screen grab.

Whilst the vendor appears to have been a "reliable" vendor in the UK (from whom I bought a "bundled" pack of "green" menu activation, firmware update, map update, licence activation, map fix & invalid security script), answering earlier questions within 24hrs regarding the steps required to do the (successful) firmware update & questions prior to attempting the map update, they appear to have "gone dark" in the past few weeks since I attempted to contact them several times regarding the problems (no, I didn't yell at them in all caps, merely asked the reasonable, non-accusatory question, "did they have any understanding how to resolve the problems").

To the best of my understanding, the MMI does not appear to be "bricked" (which I gather is more likely due to a failed firmware update), rather something has happened during the map update that is preventing the AMI from recognising the attached media & the navigation from working.

It is to be hoped that someone might be able to point me in the right direction to help me resolve these problems, cheers, and thanks in advance, Peter.

Hi @stich, thanks for that, I'll slowly go through it today to see if I can find something, although from the early look through the first couple of pages (including the instructions for loading the maps) it seems to be quite different to the instructions for the MM! 3G High (if I understand correctly, the VW system is the same as the next step up the MMI ladder from MMI 3G High, to MMI 3G +).

I guess part of the problem with instructions is that they may make perfect sense to those that are, as they say, "skilled in the art", but unless they are spelt out unambiguously step by step & taking nothing for granted, likely to fail in the hands of those not so skilled ... applies also to trying to get across complex concepts in 280 characters

Cheers, Peter

@ NucMed.
Have a read at this long post on ClubTouareg - https://www.clubtouareg.com/threads...update-version-5-13-4-latest-one-2021.300274/
The system they are talking about, RNS850, is the Audi MMI 3G+ used by Volkswagen.
There may be something in there to assist you or you could try and reach out to Lysy or DrGER, they seem to be all over the subject.

I've been through most of it now and @DrGER appears to be the go-to on it as it relates to Audi MMI3G systems, so I've left a post for them asking if they've a presence on an Audi forum somewhere in the hope that the mods don't take offence to a non-VW interloper and delete it :-)

Cheers, and thanks for the heads up, Peter

@stitch, just an update to say that @DrGER replied & has directed me to post the question(s) at Audizine Telematics Forum https://www.audizine.com/forum/forumdisplay.php/68-Telematics-Forum which I've now done.

He also has uploaded quite an up to date (it appears to be dated 26/02/2023) comprehensive PDF file on updating the MMI 3GP ... https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TP6VsX6jrZsUlpuNoCKfH07K3dYx6eSk/view

He does mention he doesn't have specific experience of the ROW releases, but I'm guessing my problems are unlikely specific to ROW.

Cheers & thanks for the redirect, Peter

@NucMed glad I could offer some direction to point you towards, best of luck in trying to resolve the issue. Please keep this forum updated with how you go, as this helps out others over time.

OK, it took quite some time since a lot was not obvious what the vendor had done, they appear to have given directions for code to access an incorrect pkg (amongst other things), as best as I can tell from DrGER's descriptions. There were also some other problems (although I'm unclear on quite how the wiping out of a nr of the AMI functions occurred), probably related to some of the code the vendor used in the install scripts.

As DrGER pointed out, these were not genuine Audi OEM updates, despite what the vendor claimed on their site, they'd taken them from various other places & packaged them up in a bundle. I'd also hesitate to call them 2022 maps (there's a main road directly behind my place that was straightened out from the 180˚ turn in 2020 that still appears as a 180˚ turn in these alleged 2022 maps, whereas Apple Maps, Google Maps, Live Traffic & Waze apps are up to date).

Amusingly, on the vendor's site, they warn against using illegal software 🙄 ... "MMI 3G Maps 2022. This is Audi genuine OEM update! Only Original Audi Firmware And Software Update. Wondering why you should buy legal Audi firmware update? The answer is simple – the installation of a firmware from some unofficial source may end in a blockage of your MMI! Undoing the damage caused by a faulty software is not simple – so better not take a risk! We offer only genuine Audi software and map updates, and also provide full support – " 👹

I suppose this poses the question, should there be some caveat placed on the use of this persons products? I'm loath to name them since 1) don't much care to give them publicity & 2) not that keen on being spammed/doxed or whatever by them.

I've asked DrGER whether he minds me putting a direct link here to the whole story, but as it's currently 0145hrs where he is, I suspect I'll not hear back until tomorrow morning.

He created a lot of code to repair the damage done, which I then loaded on to SD cards, ran them, which then showed up further problems introduced by the vendor's methods. Finally early this afternoon, everything has been resolved.

Cheers, all the best, Peter

Problems with MMI 3G High map update to version 5.13.4 now resolved & links to method

OK, as sort of promised, here's the link to the somewhat convoluted recovering of my MMI 3G High, post attempted ROW 5.13.4 map install, bought from an allegedly reputable vendor who claims the product is OEM Audi (insert whatever the emoji is for sarcastic eyeroll here) ...

https://www.audizine.com/forum/show...h-map-update-to-version-ROW-5-13-4-(MMI3G_AN)

All credit should go to DrGER over on Audizine (who, I believe, also has a presence on AudiWorld, A5OC & ClubTouareg) who managed to tease out the problems created by the map update & the so-called activator scripts ... DrGER provided two extremely good scripts to gain info to analyse the problems and then to unblock the nav, and another to finally to allow the navigation to fully initialise. I absolutely could not have even begun to understand how to do this without his unstinting help (not counting his working up a nr of personalised codings specific to resolving the damage caused by the vendors scripts).

DrGER's comments on so-called "activator" scripts (and instruction for installation of MMI 3G map updates) out there on the internet are enlightening ... it appears there has been little fact based documentation, everything mostly circulating and propagated as "feelpinion" rather than fact based documentation, something his work has attempted to resolve and codify.

Here are links to both his info analysis script and his nav unblock script, he has too a very comprehensive document (which is kept updated along with his various scripts) on the MMI 3G system (primarily MMI 3G+) ...

Interesting read over at audizine about you adventure. To DrGER all credit for his assistance in helping you through that.
As stated the mapping databases for some of the older navigation systems can be a few years behind even in the latest releases.

Just had a look at a vendor of maps for Audi, or should that be Aldi, and those 202 5 star excellent positive reviews scream red flags to me. Wise move to stay away from them.

Yes, DrGER mentions him in passing in this post re where the vendor's instruction manual came from ... which unfortunately didn't work for me (not to say that it wouldn't work in the context of a different iteration of an MMI 3G) ... who knows what the vendor added/subtracted/modified in the map update/scripts/instructions ... insert whatever the emoji is for shrug here ...

Quite ...

Unsure how he gets away with it. I bought from them on the proclamation that the maps & firmware update were OEM Audi, but as DrGER points out, the alleged OEM Audi cards are fake (as well as any so-called activation scripts). As I mentioned to @jnrDavo, "who knows what the vendor added/subtracted/modified in the map update/scripts/instructions ... insert whatever the emoji is for shrug here" ...

Oh well, lesson learnt, it's ≈ AU$275 I'll never get back ...

Cheers, all the best, Peter
