RS3 8 Y - Brake Squeal

Hi all,

I've had my RS3 8Y for about 5-6 months now & very happy with the car. Lately though I have noticed increased brake squeal. I can only hear it at low speeds when driving forward or in reverse. At first I thought it might be related to the regular rain we have been having & Steel oxides forming on brake disks but over last week it has been fairly dry & squeal is still there.

Have any of you experienced similar issues & have any of you taken it back to the dealer?

I know high performance brake pads are subject to more of these issues but just wondering whether I should bother or not.

I don’t drive mine regularly but my brakes do get noisy quite often. I found the best way is to fix it is to take it for a burn through the hills where I get hard on the brakes a bit and get them up to temp, it will shut them up but these kind of brakes will always get noisy if your not using them hard

We're on our 3rd Audi,...S3, RS3,..and now RSQ3. We've only had this problem, several years ago, with our S3, and it was a common problem with the S3 at that time,...dealers had some sort of fix, by using copper grease or something like that. Funnily enough it was the same issue as yours, like when you're in slowly moving traffic, when using the brakes, they would squeal!
But, whilst both the RS3 & RSQ3 have bigger brakes, we've had no problems with them
I agree with what Dan says, give ém a bit of a work out & see what difference it makes
As a guide, we had some large AP brakes optioned on an HSV GTO that we owned & it was suggested to me that I do ten 100k down to 5k stops in in quick succession, but do not stop, (which will get ém smok'n they said,.....and it did!) and then drive around for 10 minutes or so to let the brakes cool down before you stop.

didn't qudi start to swap the pads for ones with 'harmonic balancers' on them or something like that?

the other option is to get some anti squeak spray from supercheap... it works for a while, buy you'll have to keep on using each week/month depending on how much you drive.

Like many of you, I have owned numerous cars with high performance brakes, including HSV GTO with large AP brakes, but Audi cars (we have had S3, RS3 from 2016 & now 8Y RS3) seem to suffer from this light squeal. It is not a major issue & brakes work very well, but just a slight annoyance.

My previous RS3 had the rear brake pads replaced & new ones had an anti-vibration weights which solved the problem.

As you have suggested, I'll perform multiple harder stops to clean pads & remove oxides from disks. This is something I have previously done with other cars, but thought I would check in case Audi have an anti-vibration/squeal solution & I should ask for that instead.

I find, particularly with cars with cross drilled rotors, giving the brake rotor a good blast with the pressure washer when washing the car helps get rid of the noise for a while. When it starts squealing again I know it's time for another wash (if not before).

Just don’t do that with Carbon Ceramics or that’s the end of them

I’ve had the most horrific brake squeal with my 8Y RS3. After being messed around (think multiple disassemblies, cleanings, de-glazes and even sending sound files to Germany) over many months the dealer finally replaced the pads at their cost. Apparently they had been upgraded by Audi to have channels to get rid of the dust. They have been much better since. They still squeal, but nowhere near as badly.
I would have to say that my experience with the Audi/VW brand has been atrocious.

Have to agree with this approach. I pressure wash my wheels/rotors weekly to stay on top of them. 8Y has only squealed when reversing off the drive way after a wash for the past 4 months. Like the rest of you it seems, I've had a HSV and multiple STI's and this process seems to work. A good thrash will also sort though, and adds a little grin !

Yes mine does the same........the dealer warned me about it when i first picked it up. Said to do the hard braking trick every time it started doing it........ it works for a while, but comes back. Very annoying. Considering switching to a different brand of pad? Has anyone had any luck with that

See post above in this thread from Dingo. It seems Audi have released an upgraded pad with channels to reduce the severity of the squeal. May be worth exploring that option as well.
