RS3 8Y Modifications

Hey Dan,

Any news from Akrapovic yet? There response will be interesting.. or reset/disconnect and code check? keen to install the ASR but being a wuss till I hear a bit more đź’©.
Still no answer from Akrapovic yet but my mechanic has been checking around with others and it’s not uncommon to get CAN faults but it seems a bit unusual for the other faults mine has also so we are going to disconnect the sound controller and clear codes then leave it for a few days to see what or if any codes return.

You don’t have to supply the parts in in most cases whoever you get to fit parts might be able to source them cheaper than you can, I don’t know places in Sydney but hopefully someone on here can recommend decent workshops or try Google
Try MR Autosport in Ashfield or Carbon Autohaus in North Rocks.

Try PacorTech in Ingleburn (South West Sydney) Dave is great and been playing with VW and Audi for 15 plus years now.

Quick update on the sound controller. Had it disconnected today, cleared the faults and only 1 came back which was for the rear camera. Still no reply from Akrapovic but will drive it around a little more and check codes to see if anymore return but it looks like the sound controller does create a few codes not related to the exhaust which is a bummer because the sound has changed now and it’s a bit quieter.
On a side not my mechanic was telling me he had a brand new Merc come in recently and he decided to check for faults seeing as it was new and there were more than what I had, this was pretty much brand new and had no modifications whatsoever.

if the faults that came up and did not affect the performance and did not show as a fault on the instrument cluster why worry about it. Mine came up with a few and it is not bothering me to the point of removing the controller. Mine had faults before any mods also. New car glitch.
My mechanic (Carbonautohaus) said he doubted very much the controller is creating faults

My main concern was the 2 faults that came up regarding the brake booster, sure the car was driving fine but brakes is not something I like taking chances with not only because it’s a safety concern but if something does happen and there’s injuries it raises legal ramifications also seeing as I’m aware of it. My mech was adamant the controller wouldn’t be causing most of these faults and wasn’t surprised there was CAN and exhaust pressure ones but removing the controller and seeing the faults not return shows the ECU is very sensitive to changes with the car so it makes you think what other issues could it raise in time also. It also raises the possibility that if there car has a genuine warranty problem eventuate and they do a scan then do they put the blame on the sound controller and wipe their hands of it?

Nothing yet, I wasn’t expecting anything until late this week anyway but might give them a call tomorrow and see where we go from here. I’m wondering how many people that have fitted valve controllers have done diagnostic checks to see if there are any faults even though there’s no warning lights on dash and car seems ok.
Through the process of installing it's quite possible that some electrical components got disconnected, so if the codes weren't cleared as part of the installation I wouldn't be surprised at all if there was some fault codes registered post install. As long as they can be cleared and don't return it is nothing to worry about.

I cleared them when I checked and they returned straight away as did it when my mechanic cleared them, since disconnecting to controller only 1 fault returned, the controller was disconnected underneath the car and the factory plugs were connected to the exhaust so nothing was touched underneath the dash as the controller gets its power from the connections at the exhaust. Pretty confident faults aren’t caused by anything disconnected underneath the dash

Going back to the cosmetics for a moment if I may - has anyone got the Maxton CARBON Front Splitter / front lip installed (on the 8Y)?
Anyone have any thoughts or comments to share about this one perhaps?
Whilst the Horsch one looks great and apparently fits perfectly etc, I personally do also think it sort of "protrudes" a little too much? However, in saying that, I've not seen one in person so perhaps is not a fair comment? Cheers

I’m not a huge fan of the Maxton stuff even though it seems to be popular. I’m not sure how close the splitter is to the ground when going up driveways but would be surprised if it wasn’t close or even scraped on cars people hav lowered so the Maxton might be a good option for the lowered cars?

Hey Frankster! I looked into the Maxton carbon front lip when first released back in October last year. I emailed Ausbodyworks and was quoted $2300 with a minimum 8 week wait, possibly longer. A bit pricey i thought being unseen.. Looking at the European website it was listed at $729 Euro. I emailed them for shipping and was quoted $455 Euro. Roughly $1900 AU at the time. Still not great but I ordered. Website quoted 4 weeks build + 2 weeks delivery. I was contacted 2 weeks later to let me know the lip would be at least 14 weeks away. I asked for a refund which they supplied.

Was recommended the Horsch lip from a mate but i wasn't sold on the design. I agree, it protrudes too much for my taste and going on green duco there will be no hiding it. Did contemplate calling them as they quote on there website hand built to see if they could/would customise but never got around to it. (I also have not seen one in the flesh though..)

I have looked at all lips currently available and "for me" the Maxton seems the most subtle and would suit the OEM Carbon pack. That said though, I'm not a big fan of the rest of there 8Y kit (Don't mean to offend anyone)

The lip dimensions are quoted at 25mm depth so with my car lowered on Eibach springs this would bring the front down to ~100mm clearance ..

Available for $1950 now, it's starting to look more attractive again. Thanks for the link!

I’m thinking Maxton Carbon or Akrapovic rear diffuser. Not sure what way to go.
Not an easy decision atm. Personally i find the Maxton a little over the top. I'm not a big fan of the external lip that protrudes above the exhaust outlets and across the length of the bumper. The Akrapovic for me has cleaner lines and is fairly subtle which looks to match the OEM carbon option.

I don't hate this one but have not seen it in the flesh. It doesn't seem to pop against the red duco but that could just be the lighting..

I'm still sitting on the fence in hope a lip and diffuser show up that my fussy arse likes ..

I’m the same with you on the Maxton with the protruding lip. The Akra seems the nicest yet. Hard to know though unless you see one fitted in the flesh. Two very different styles

Stage 2 ECU… 💚 Promising for those looking to tune.
Hopefully we start seeing more tuning options soon.

Here another option for splitter and diffuser on the 8Y, looks ok

I don’t mind it. Hard to judge from limited on car pics..

Hi all,

I've been occasionally searching for a Start/Stop Memory module to install on my 8Y RS3. I installed one years ago on my 8V RS3 which I purchased via Ebay & it worked well. Can't seem to find one for the 8Y though. Is there a reason why they are not available for this model? Or if you have purchased one that works, would you please share the source.

PS. I have OBD11 Pro & have successfully used it to enable memory function on Lane Keep Assist but can't find a way to do the same to Start/Stop function.

Thanks,

Michael

Don’t know much about plug in modules for this but I tried Carly on mine and the ECU doesn’t allow me to code anything, my mechanic tried OBD11 to code the start stop and couldn’t do it either so I think it comes down to the ECU still being locked

I did another fault scan on my car after driving it around without the sound controller plugged in and 10 faults came back, some new and some the same so it seems like in my case at least that faults are related to the car itself. Akrapovic have gotten back to us and said it’s common for there to be faults when using a controller because the CAM is detecting a disturbance in the communications, these are apparently not faults but because it senses something different it raises it as a fault so I have decided to plug the controller back in and live with it.

I took the car down to The Bend and had a track day with it yesterday and highly recommended having a go on a race track to fully appreciate what it can do. There were quite a few Hondas, S2000, type R etc, a few Mustangs and XR6 turbos, people with dedicated track cars, a few putting slicks on and pulling out interior etc. I was pretty impressed how I went considering I ran my street tires and car is pretty much stock, the only real cars that blew me away was a Lotus which was running slicks and was set up for the track and a Porsche otherwise I pretty much kept up with everyone else or blew them away and that was with me not driving it especially hard as I was easing off into the corners much earlier and not braking massively hard. I was almost keeping up with an M4 on the straight but in the bends was better and once I passed him he spun out behind me. Even the XR6 turbos which were not stock and the Mustangs I was either keeping up with them on the straight or reeling them in which was surprising considering they should have had more power than me. If I take it out again I will be upgrading the brake fluid and pads and will push it a bit harder cause generally I was trying to avoid cooking the brakes yesterday but all in all was a great day.
