RS3 squeaky brakes

Is the noise coming from the rear or front (like pickles noted)? Ive mentioned in another thread about a clunking noise coming from the
rear of my car. My haldex pump failed a little while ago and the noise went away. Once the pump was replaced the noise started again.
It is becoming much more frequent too as it only used to occur after long periods of being stationary (ie first thing in the morning).

So let me get this straight. Clunking is good or bad?

Dude all big brakes squeal. Iv had ap racing and Brembo 4 pots 6 pots on my past rides and they all squeal. Depending on how much brake grease and humidity in the air your gonna get squeal now and then. It's just the pads resonating on the rotor it's nothing to worry about. Only way to get rid of it is take the pads out, give the calliper and pads a good clean and apply a decent amount of grease. You can get some stuff from repco that works like a cement that gets rid of squeal. Or change ya pads to a softer and less metal content if possible

Not so my friend, not so at all.
Prior to owning the RS3 we've owned a new C63, and also a HSV VZ GTO with the optional AP 6 spot brakes,....nil squeal on either.

I'm not saying your always going to get it. My point is big brakes will squeal time to time. My TTRS 4 pots are quite as a mouse but my r34 gtr brembo 2 pot rears squeal like a pig. It mostly comes down to compound and rotor. Some pads just don't sing well with certain rotors. For instants I had a legacy B4 while back with brembo pads and rotors and squeal all day all night no matter what. Changed out the rotors with DBA 2000 set and all went away.

Another very important thing to mention is pad shims. Some brembo like the F40 2 pots don't require shims which is the cause for squeal. If the RS3 don't come with shims then there is your answer.

Pad "shims"?....Some on here have said "dampers" correct the problem?....Are they the same thing, & how do they work?..We've had the "grease", which fixed the issue for maybe ten days, after which, it returned.

Mine received new discs and pads front and rear before I collected it..It was noisy for the first 500km and thereafter (a further 1500km now), it's rare to hear anything and if there is a squeak, it's quiet and brief.

Iv never heard anyone call them "dampers" but yes I think we are talking about the same thing. Shims are used to eliminate any small movement between the pad and piston. If not installed correctly (90%of the time there not) it will result in excessive noise. I had a set of Nismo type R pads that never came with shims and driving me mad. I eventually used the OEM shim set and it solved the problem. So again some times manufacturers don't require them.

Audi have these frequency "dampers" they screw onto the caliper - tuned to the squeal frequency. It's a cheat but works. They recorded my squeal "frequency" and sent for the appropriate "damper". Worked a treat.

I agree though - quite a lot of effort and engineering for something that on other squealing brakes a $10 shim fixes.

If it's Anything like theses things I'd definitely steer clear

Lol.. that's what it is.

As Matt said they are different weights based on frequency emitted.

Well I got no idea how you would install it on a RS3 being that they are a mono block. But still it's a stupid after though idea. God knows what impact it has on track days and such.
Bottom line would be if it hinders any performance then it's completely pointless being that you spent all that money on a performance car

Agree. It's a band-aid fix.
There is a detailed article on the UK forums about shims being the real permanent fix.
The brake squeal issue has been around since 8P, 8V and now 8V gen2.

True it's a band aid solution to it for sure. The fact that Audi are installing such devices and calling it there own technology is bad. Unless it's what Iv notice on the RS3 calliper where there isn this bulge on the side? Can anyone share some light on this cause Iv been wanting to know what it is for some time now. Never seen this feature on a calliper before.

I'm just going to throw this out there guys. When dealing with performance brakes I always expect them to squeal to some extant especially if you do track days, "spirited hills runs", etc. RS brakes are huge for factory fitment and make most factory Brembo setups look tiny. Let them squeal! Tell everyone your car has stomping brakes!!!

Your completely right bat.
Big brakes naturally squeal. But more important thing, theses people need to know that anything you do to prevent this from happening is unnatural and will hinder performance in a small degree.
But at the same time I get it, it's annoying as hell. But this isn't new to anyone who's either owned big brakes kits or have had plenty of time on the track.

Nope, they do not.
As I've said on this forum before, we owned an HSV VZ GTO with optional AP 6 spots,...NO squeal. Also bought new a 2012 C63 P.P.,...big brakes, NO squeal. Got plenty of mates who are HSV owners, GTS/GTSR etc,...NO squeal.
In the Audi situation, it's a disgrace, & something that owners should not have to tolerate.

Yes we acknowledge that not all oem sets do but if they don't they certainly have a preventative technique ether shims, grease or other. Big brakes will squeal
Also my cousins c63 does squeal and I have heard plenty of HSV Kits specially the redline series with the brembo F40 sets do squeal.
Plenty of factors in play here they cause it. Humility is a huge factor and pad compound
