S3 (8V) | Tuning Box or ECU Remap?

Tuning Box or ECU tune?

I am interested in whether those with S3 (8V) are likely to go for a tuning box or an ECU tune (when available).

I can see advantages and disadvantages of both.

The tuning box looks cheaper, easier to fit, doesn't flag TD1, and seems to still get great gains. The ECU tune is more "integrated", arguably has more control over parameters, and could have higher gains.

Which way will you go and why?

I'm in the same boat so be great to hear what people say. So far APR and REVO tunes look very impressive but will show up at service intervals where as the DTUK tuning box apparently doesn't. Lucky I still have to wait another 6 weeks before mine arrives so will be watching this thread closely, thanks boltor for kicking this off.

no problems. mine is now due 30 Sep, so a bit of time to make a decision too. I assume APR and REVO will have their ECU tunes out by then as well - looks like only tuning boxes at this stage. I must admit the TD1 flag issue may be a big decider for me.

What's TD1? If it wasn't for showing up at servicing the ECU remap would be a no-brainer IMHO. More control, better integration.

TD1 is the warranty flag that automatically triggers when your car is connected to the Audi online systems when servicing and if you have modified your vehicle (eg: ECU tune). Seems to be quite a lot of information / misinformation on whether or not an ECU tune (or for that matter a piggy back tuning box) will trigger this. Hard to get to the bottom of this. I am comfortable that an ECU tune triggers the TD1, but it seems as though there is debate on whether a tuning box also does so. I'm sure more knowledgeable people will chime in here...

I have a Racechip Ultimate and have had no issues as yet, I have an OBD2-Vag reader which shows AFR,Boost and various other data all of which seem at safe levels. The only statistic missing is the Exhaust Gas Temperatures which if you read previous post this may be an issue, however no one has yet proved what the difference between stock and the chip is. Furthermore you should do all your own testing as everyone is pushing there own product. I have also had the car on the Dyno and had the same results as the Vag Reader.

would much rather have the ECU in control of all variables

yep, that's where I started too (both my A4 and Golf R had ECU tunes), but I guess I am more concerned about warranty at the moment, so looking at options. Something deep down inside me still wants the "real deal" though. It just seems like the tuning boxes are closing the gap for performance, presumably as they are monitoring more inputs.

Pete206, am also looking at racechip ultimate, are you running additional hardware or just the chip wit standard set up?
cheers

Just the chip ,and have it set on performance 2 setting 3 and did 0-100 in 4-06 sec . I am still considering an ECU flash either APR or Revo but will wait and see what the final figures are.

Added Racechip url to the first post. Any others I have missed? I don't think there are any ecu tunes yet (but must be close...)

Add ABT and MTM

thanks!

List now looks like:

- ABT - Chip tuning for the ABT Audi S3 Sportback - Engine Technology
- DTUK - http://www.diesel-performance.co.uk/...300-ps-(2013-)
- MTM - http://www.mtm-online.de/en/Audi/S3-...?FZID=S38V221Q
- Racechip - http://www.racechip.com/chiptuning/a...21kw/index.php

Its interesting to see the variation in the number of connectors - presumably more is "better"? (ie: monitoring more parameters). See MTM vs Racechip for example.
