Thread: S3 Coolant leak - 4 years 60,000km service

    Default S3 Coolant leak - 4 years 60,000km service

Dropped the car (S3 2016 MY17) off for 4th year 60,000km service. Car has only 40,000km on the odometer.

Just got a call to say that [s]coolant is leaking[/s] thermostat needs replacement and quoted north of $2k to fix. Obviously, I pushed back as I don't find it acceptable that a car that cost this much, and has full dealer service record should have this issue. Unfortunately, the service manager is away so I can't get an immediate reply but what do you guys think are my chances to get this fixed by Audi Australia via good will?

So it sounds like the car is coming up on 5 years old, but has only done 40k kms.

With full Audi dealer service history and low kays, I would be pushing for a good will fix on the issue.

If you've got a solid relationship/history with the dealer and the brand they should come to the party. If they don't, you're probably best taking it to an Audi specialist independent workshop to fix as the repair cost will no doubt be significantly less.

Thanks. Car should be just below 4 years as I only collected it (brand new) 31 July 2017.

Shouldn't matter too much in this instance, but it might be worth confirming the warranty start and end date (may show on your old service paperwork).

    Yep, warranty expiry 25/08/2020.

Sorry I just had a read of the notes after picking up the car. It says the thermostat needs replacement, so Iím not sure if itís thatís related. Iíll update the thread title.

I just had the same thing with my car. MY15 first it was the thermostat i paid for replacement, then it never totally fixed it. Next service was the water pump which I suspected in the first place. I ended up getting "Good will" and audi covered the repair was around $2.5k. Feel free to PM me for info. So, short answer, yes push back and say a car like this shouldn't have a leak with KM's that are this low and not that old. Good luck.

still seems a high cost to replace a thermostat and/or replace a water pump...

But as above, it should be done under good will... They strongly encourage you to use genuine parts and dealerships, then they should have no recourse when something that should last a lot longer (new cars should to leak coolant for many years) goes wrong. Lots of car manufacturers offering 5, 7 and 10 years now, so why can a cheaper brand have more confidence in their parts compared to Audi.

Prior to owning our RS3 we owned an S3 and we had a similar problem relative to a leak in the thermostat area. At the time, this was a known issue and it was fixed under warranty.
Presumably yours is out of warranty, but if you've had full dealer service, then if you put it to your dealer that this has been an issue, maybe they'll be amenable to helping you.
    Pickles.
