So I spent a fair bit of Sunday Googling about VAG diagnostic code readers.
I thought I'd post a summary of my findings here.
First, the thingie you plug into your ODB2 port, what's at the other end?
Being able to use a bluetooth or wifi connected device would be ideal. However, from a software point of view, I found only 2 alternatives:
So for now, I'm going the old school approach.
I bought a couple of cables (under $12 each, inc shipping, from Hong Kong); one with FT232bl chip, and the other an ELM 327. The aim is to use these with VCDS-Lite running on my laptop.
I also bought a KW809 (said to be similar to VAG 405) for $47 inc shipping from Hong Kong. I ought to be able to keep this in the car, and use it if the laptop is not handy (or I can't get VCDL-Lite running with one of those cables).
One thing to be aware of is that there seems to be a distinction between CAN and CAN-BUS. Things changed around 2005, so depending on whether your car is older or newer (mine is older), you need to make sure your buy the right thing.
VCDS-Lite apparently only works with the older models. It won't work with CAN-Bus vehicles.

- a dedicated reader (eg MaxScan)
- a Windows laptop (generally connected via USB pretending to be an older serial port)
- a bluetooth device (eg phone or tablet)
- a wifi connected device

- "The HEX-NET WiFi Interface with VCDS-Mobile builtin will turn most smart devices with WiFi and a web browser into a factorylevel diagnostic tool". But it is USD 399, and they aren't shipping outside the US yet.
- iobd2.co.uk, £96 for the hardware (inc shipping)
